It is a possibility for some to keep their jobs. Staples is on a firing spree, and they are simply making store managers miserable if they do not have enough dirt to fire them.
Part of this is to avoid severance payouts when they close stores and also so there are some positions available to give to Depot managers. If they fire a current Staples manager and offer the job to a current Depot manager, that is one less severance package to be paid out.
