As a long time q engineer (>10 years), I started thinking of qualcomm as the only company that does real work and solves tough problems. I used to look down upon broadcom for example, as if the company was somehow inferior. Similar feelings about small companies - amateurs compared to the well oiled machinery of q. Never even thought about working at another company. I started realizing now that others companies do good work too. In fact, you develop more skills at smaller companies. I've been doing such a narrow task that i havent added anything to my resume for the last few years. Starting to feel stifled now and it may not be a bad thing to go to another company. Main issue, as with most of you is that there is nothing else in san diego and it's a tough decision to move to the bay area.

Op. It's about time people woke up and realized there are better options than qc now. It's was a good while it lasted but the decline has been in for last 5 or so years or so. Don't blame s&m. Get up and go and feel better about your work life again.
Carmel valley and Sunnyvale are both god awful suburban cultural wastelands
it's funny that people are ragging on Sunnyvale yet would want to live in Carmel valley where you are raped by useless hoas, mello roose (sp?), in artificial neighborhoods with no walk ability except if you a in the small area served by del mar nights shopping center. Typical insular San Diego perspective.
i'd rather live in a vibrant city and work in a dull city, not the other way around. everybody has their own tastes though. i find sunnyvale has all the excitement of a doorknob
Kick the queer gay from here !!!
Kick the queer gay from here !!!
On a rare vacation day, please drive the road to Santa Cruz past Los Gatos and stop before you cross the the top of the mountain ridge. Then, turn around and look back at the expansive view over the Valley. Doesn't the view of L.A. from Angeles National Forest look pretty darn good now? ;-) The air quality in both places will rob about 10 years of your life expectancy. I rather smoke...
I suggest Sunnyvale because it's centrally located to just about anywhere you might want to work. If you don't mind the hellish commute during rush hour, or are able to work remotely most of the time, there are more affordable options. Problem is that in the Bay Area, everyone thinks they're entitled to a 10-minute commute. That's why property in the center of the valley is so damned expensive. If you want to take the chance consulting and can work odd hours, there was the perfect REO in La Honda: 2BR/2BA shake roof and exterior for $118,000. For that price, it doesn't matter how much work it needs. You can sell that million dollar albatross, get a small mortgage, finish or add on to suit, and deduct a percentage for using it as your home office. And invest the rest. Maybe put some money down on a nice vacation place/pot farm in Humboldt.
but how can you put up with living in sunnyvale?
I have worked at 3 other companies besides Q and have found each one of them better a work environment than Q. working at Q is as good as working in a sweatshop in Bangladesh....sometimes i wonder why does any American citizen work here at all...maybe they like sweatshops...try Bangladesh!
NO thanks on the bay area. It's not worth the high expense of living and maintaining a home there
I have a 1700 sqft home in sunnyvale that is going on the market soon for 1.45million. Just check out the mls....I expect it will sell within a week, like my other one. Can't believe these were around 650kish when they were REO's just a few years back....Who needs stock options when you've got REOs.
As a q queer engineer, I highly recommend the gay I mean bay area.
OP, There are lot of engineers got sucked in to it and trying dig themselves out of it...it's painful realization many of us are running in to considering marketable skill set valued in current job market...
If you are going to make the move, do it now. There's a shortage of housing in this area and many homes that are priced right get sold in bidding wars for more than the sellers expected. Find an apartment you can live with in Sunnyvale or someplace centrally located. Look at various neighborhoods on weekends. When you find some place you like and feel will be a good buy, Go for it.
