Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Staff or lower title should have no problems finding jobs

If you are a staff or lower, I think since you most likely have a decent skillset and were a 'doer', you will probably have an easy time finding a job. If you were a Sr Staff, Director, Sr Dir or above, you most likely only know how to attend meetings, copy/paste values from one cell into another in excel, and of course order meals for meetings. Those folks will have a tough time finding work as once something even remotely technical is asked, they'll revert back to collecting status, and spreadsheets. I've never seen a company with such middle management bloat, incredible. I think they could get away with 50% cuts in the right spots and really streamline. Run thru PH and look at all the dirs, sr dirs, etc with less than 5-10 reports - wtf? Dirs make $180-$220, with bonus, RSU's, etc, total rewards most likely pushing $300k, all to do what, collect status?

Being cheap means everything. Look at the infestation that is resulting in the imminent down fall of QC.

Getting back to the theme of the original post, it does make sense to "right-size" the layers Paul 66 mentioned - as there are a LOT of those titles that produce very little value, yet their overhead is tremendous. I am actually in that set of titles and see the waste and feel that the current atmosphere is good - to weed out. I have been with the company for 13 years, gotten promoted along the way (sometimes against my will, who would actually WANT a mgr title after you know what it entails?), and if I get weeded out, then so be it, but I certainly won't complain. I feel in the past 13 years, my skillset has devolved to emails, spreadsheets, collecting and giving status, and yes, the "people skills" (explaining to uppers why things aren't on track, etc) and if I am laid off at least I can spend some time learning actual, relevant and useful skills. I think the people that feel their "Q skills" are useful, deep down inside know that Q created these "skills", and they're only relevant at Q.

OP - Where the F**k did you dream this up from? Was this after you smoked your banana peels? Every job has classifications and experience needs and most of the time, people are hired for job smarts and not because you are some wet nosed young guy with 2 years experience only asking for $75K salary. Being cheap doesnt mean anything.

the higher the title, the more bitter and defensive people get about their fiefdoms and their "wealth"

I know its a "pipe dream" by now but wouldn't it be nice if Qualcomm was ran like Zappos maybe significant cost would be reduced and maybe increase in speed for innovation: https://youtu.be/-DYigfNJQlg

hahahaha...nice rant. Who cares???

I have enough cash saved up to survive 8+ years without having to make another penny. I can afford the same lifestyle, continue to send my kids to private school, take weeks long vacations with family and friends, go out to eat at nice places, and continue driving my Mercedes SUV. All that without having to work or touch my retirement or investments. So even if I don't find a job right away, I don't care. I have all the time in the world. I'm sure when I come around to it after enjoying my long vacation, I'll be able to find a job. I'm not in a hurry.

So you can hate on people that have succeeded, but I'm not the one worried about moving, losing my house, finding a job, or the direction the economy is headed.

Poetic justice.

you socialist idiot. you want everybody to be one level. what, you don't think it's fair because other people get ahead and you can't? you want to get this shit for free? f*** you. work harder or smarter, one or the other but don't be jealous of people that succeed. It makes you look like an envious whiner. do you also complain when other men have hotter wives than your fat ugly bitch?

Oh man, that office space clip is DEAD ON, I worked with so many useless sr staff/directors, pretty much their 'visionary' contribution was showing up late to a status meeting that THEY scheduled to ask "ok, where are we at?". People skills....

Ha, 'lot of managerial shit', like? Outlook? Excel? Sucking up to your upper? Delivering status reports that the lowlifes wrote and spoon fed to you? Give me a break... Good luck when you write 'took care of a lot of managerial shit' on your resume, unless you go to Intel where they'll let you continue on your 'achived path'.

You are probably a low life engineer who achieved nothing in his life. Sr. Staff and up have to take care of a lot of managerial shit so that bitches like you can work without interacting with other teams and people, which you suck at. If it weren't for us, you guys would have been laid of years back, you f***ing Oprah's shit.
