Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

How's it going at other teach-out schools?

My school is trying to operate in a "business as usual" mode, but it's fooling no one. The students say the teachers seem very depressed (don't know why...).

Other problems include: being told to placate the students who have huge problems academically; lack of improvements in equipment; administrators cutting therir hours back because, well, they can.

We were also told to expect to be open until 2019. The students returning after break was what I expected - quite light. My first class was supposed to be 24 students. Fourteen showed up. I had an average of 6 student no-shows in each class. How is THAT going to stretch into 4 more years of a job?

Would love to hear others' experiences.

I'm not even at a teach out school and the morale is depressing. You're either in one of two camps as faculty: in denial and still drinking the corporate koolaid or waiting for the house of cards to fall.

I'll tell you how its going in my online class. Packed to the gills. Wishing I hadn't taken this course. Crazy huge.

Which schools are you all referring to?

It's very depressing at our school. Fewer students makes it quiet. There isn't any laughing and carrying on between classes. It's almost like they are waiting for the next bomb to drop. Some are not slackers - they are due to finish at the end of the quarter. Some are still dropping classes with the intention of taking them in the future (as if the school will be open for two more quarters). The Powers That Be said we will be open for two more years - I don't believe it. Staff morale is cordial but depressing. Our main campus is not giving the students enough help.

It's not, students have gotten the memo. No amount of advertising or scrubbing opinion websites is going to stop the bleeding. Only the most uneducated or slackers will continue to return. At a some point, even the most average of students is going to realize its time to cut their losses. Also, with the Gov possibly forgiving them their debt, its going to be even faster.
