Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Sanjay - how did he do it?

Anyone knows the story about Sanjay?

Joins Q in 1994 as Senior Engineer (with a PHD)

Becomes VP in 1997. This is one hell of a jump. how could this be possible?

Turns into SVP in 1998, just a year after.

2003 he is an EVP

COO in 2006.

Jumps ship and becomes CEO of MM in 2008...

how are such fast promotions are even possible?! What did the guy know? or should say Who? Did he had some personal leverage on someone like PJ? IJ?

Before was even worse than now, back then you can jump positions in matter of 1 year based of who u know etc....similar like today but little bit more difficult.

Why wasting time to talk about SJ? He's past tense in Q.

He desperately wanted to split QCT off an and run with as a CEO. PJ was notably relieved when he left for MM.

Heard that developing Qualcomm's own CPU was a concept he was pushing for. is it true?

As a Co-CEO of Motorola in 2008, Sanjay Jha earned a total compensation of $8,462,544, which included a base salary of $905,769, a $836,931 cash bonus, stocks granted of $2,356,136, and options granted of $4,004,000.(3)(4)

After the Google acquisition of Motorola Mobility is complete, Jha would receive $13.20 million in cash and $52.5 million for his stock options and shares. The cash component of the Golden Parachute package included $10.8 million in severance pay and a $2.4 million bonus. The cash portion is equal to three times Jha’s base salary and bonus.(5) Jha stepped down after the deal was completed on 22 May 2012.

MediaFLO was sanjay's moronic idea. UMB / OFDMA was sanjay's decent idea. Even though it didn't become a product it lit a fire underneath the EV-DO people who were slacking off, and provided a basis for LTE enhancements. His main idea was to stop using x86 and use ARM instead. Q management being completely and I mean totally and absolutely clueless about computers, felt that this made Sanjay brilliant.

The trick with Sanjay's career is to have a bunch of stupid ideas, get a bunch of people (others) to work on it, then when your idea is shown to be brain-dead, you can blame the execution, not yourself for your dumb idea(s).

If you expect Sanjay to save QC, good luck. Look at his prior record at MM. He's a fluke. QC is toast.

Sanjay was smart guy, good education,Joined early in very successful startup, got lucky few times..thats all. Why you think SM is where he is, Had Sanjay not left in 2008 and PJ would have kept his dick in control not forced to step down( SM getting MSFT was fluke played by Q ) he probably would have been stuck as SVP..

Hey, even back at 97, if I would make my team work 24/7, i would not jump make a jump like that.

Maybe he had some dirt material on some exec?

How did that brilliant dude do at Motorola? I think he was CEO for less than a year, and look at the mess he left behind. Not a good dude for the Engineers.

To go up the ladder that fast at QC couldn't be from increasing sales etc. because he wouldn't have had a track record. So it wasn't a bottom line decision for sure. As far as his rise at QC, he must have matched whatever qualities his superiors were looking for, which are usually very personal to them. Some superiors like to promote folks who are ruthless towards others and demand 7 days a week of work, not necessarily the innovators.

Can you imagine today's HR telling Sanjay in 1996 that he's just about ready to make the jump to Staff engineer based on time in title.

Did he have any previous experience before Q? Did he have an MBA in hand when becoming a VP? How big was the IC team at the time he became a VP?

right place right time means the rules were different back then, and it was a much smaller company. now the rules would prevent those types of jumps, no matter how smart.

I worked with Sanjay. If anyone has ever worked with Sanjay the answer would be obvious. We always wondered in meetings, why is he not the CEO.

He also did not suffer fools easily.

I'd be curious to know about this too. I've always wondered about this. Although, I didn't know/think it was a direct Sr Engg to VP promotion.

Are there stories of awe from anyone who had worked with him directly?

Right place and right time is not sufficient to have Sr Eng become a VP. There must have been more to it. I am not even sure plain personal skills of his whatever they are could have been sufficient. Lets say he's a superstar. He meets the CEO and impresses him. He has an MBA assume... alright.. the CEO assigns him to be a director... 3 levels higher... but a VP? 5-6 levels jump?

if 1994 Sanjay joined today's QCOM as Sr. Engineer things would work differently. Right place, Right time for a very smart dude.

He did it the traditional way. Working hard.

Besides his grey matter was of superior quality. He would know what you are saying before you say it. That matters a hell lot once to rise up the chain.
