Changes to Vacation Plans Coming

Get unlimited time off under the new plan. True? Any HR folks here? Many Tech Companies are doing it.

Unlimited vacation would equal an immediate 1 year sabbatical for me. Remember, Q used to allow for that?

I am not sure how it is supposed to work but one place I worked at had unlimited vacation with basically an unwritten cap. It wasn't a hard fixed number but when you got close your request was declined. The only benefit I saw was for the company not having to pay out vacation time.

Don't even think about taking a vacation. Take the family to Sea World. Tell them a story about a whaling ship that was very successful in hunting whales. One day, all of the whales are killed, and the whole crew gets laid off.

Problem is that we will be so busy with all our coworkers being released. Then if you do take time off and don't contribute, you will be the next to go.

There are more benefits to the company. Most people don’t take all their 3-4 weeks, and without a vacation balance, it is easier to reject or delay vacation requests. The company does not need to set aside cash for accrued vacation. Accrued vacation is considered a financial liability. The lost to employees is probably equivalent to 10% in pay cut.

Being layed off = unlimited vacation days.

Broadcom already does this. basically, vacation time is given based on the discretion managers subject to project deadlines. but the most important reason why companies do this is so they don't have to pay off a vacation balance when someone terminates.
