Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Never thought I'd say this. But having been laidoff at Qualcomm and joining Broadcom didn't turn out so bad after all

I mean, with the pending Avago merger, I'll probably get laidoff again next year. But at least my RSU's have doubled at Broadcom. And I think under change of control, my remaining RSUs will vest immediately if I were to be laidoff as part of the restructuring, according to the company RSU agreement.

Don't be in denial here, the players that'll consider buying a BRCM BU are all in hot seats now and/or have overlapping organic solutions, closing a profiting but low profit BU is not going to be that hard for a seasoned M&A company like Avago, didn't they let go 80% of Emulex?

NowIAmAvago, They'll find a buyer as long as the business unit is profitable. The reason why they didn't find a buyer for the LTE division was because the absence of the later.

You are 100% wrong. If a BU can't meet model and a buyer can't be found, it will be closed. There are a lot of reasons why this makes sense which are to lengthy to try and explain.

Correct. Q folks shouldn't plan on jumping to Avago unless you are going into the fbar or wired organizations. Other orbs run the risk of additional layoffs over time so unless you have a strong stomach I would look elsewhere.

@NowIAmAvago: Does it mean that QC employees don’t need to bother applying at BRCM/Avago?

For the broadcom folks "joining" Avago. What will go down is each Broadcom BU will be looked at to determine if the have s path to meet the Avago business model over many quarters. If the BU can, it will become part of Avago but will let go anywhere between 10% to 30% of the headcount. For those BUs that don't have a clear path to meet the model, they will be sold. If I buyer can't be found, they will be closed. I am not sure about all RSUs vesting immediately. Definitely didn't happen at other places Avago acquired.

Don't get me wrong. I was really sad to leave the Q. But when I joined B, it wasn't that bad. People here treated me really well, and people here are pretty smart. We don't nearly have as much the luxury of overhead of having many people staffed to do one project, so i get to learn and do a lot. I would have been really happy here, if it weren't for the Avago acquistion. Now, we're screwed. But I guess it's the common theme in across our industry, so I'm not alone. I just try to take it a day at a time and laugh at it. It's really not in any of our control, so we just need to sit back and laugh.

I know a guy who is really incompetant and he was laid off by Qualcomm in 1999 in November which means he had to sell his shares by the end of February - THE HIGHEST POINT FOR THE STOCK FOR THE NEXT 15 YEARS. So, just realize that if you are first against the wall when the revolution comes, that might be a blessing! You seem to have taken lemons and made lemonade, congrats!
