I think I'll just do what bigwigs here do and just look at my investments all day... But man, I've been doing that, and it sure is boring not to work on anything engineering related. How can people possibly do this day in, day out for a long period of time.

Not exactly. If I'm still on payroll and burn through my vacation while simultaneously working at the new company, I'm essentially double dipping. And while on vacation from the A, I still accrue vacation time while on vacation and any holiday encountered I'm still paid, and any sort of 401k matching is still paid out, and my medical is still in full force, along with my flex spending. If on the other hand, I leave, yes Q pays me for the vacation day, but any sort of other side benefit stops. Essentially if I take the vacation and start work elsewhere at the same time, I'm not really working for the Q anymore, but they are still paying me and I still get all the benefits during that time.
If they dont give u the package then you will waste your 2 weeks of unused vacation pay when you leave the company. They pay for days not used as vacation.

It's tough, but I've been doing it for a long time while collecting several hundred K per year in compensation. I keep myself busy reading Franklin Antonio's posts to investment.mail and the remodeling list as well. He's been my slacking mentor for years. The gravey train is finally pulling into the station though. Time to get off.
...maybe I should just take a vacation for an additional 2 weeks after I join the new company, and then call in sick an additional week. And that will take me into september, when maybe I can get a package, even though I already started to work elsewhere....
