Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

I don't get why all you non Qualcommers pile on the h1b. They aren't the problem

The h1bs here on Qualcomm dime are paid the same as non h1bs. The issue is managements decision to ship work to offshore groups at 1/8th the cost savings. Those people aren't here on h1b. I suspect some of the whiners aren't even Qualcomm engineers or engineers at all. Because it doesn't take a lot of brainpower to figure that out and anyone with a reasonable engineering mind would realize this obviously.

There is growing sentiment in the U.S. To limit the H1B program. The H1B visas are only supposed to be approved if there are no Americans available to fill a position. The corporations are obviously only using the H1B program to hire cheap labor. Senators Dick Durbin and Jeff Sessions have ordered a Congressional investigation. Corporate lobbyists will put tremendous pressure on Congress and the White House to maintain the H1B status quo. If enough Americans make their feelings known to their U.S. Representatives there could be future limits on the program.

I have no problem with the H1B employees, many of the ones I work with are quite good. However, in general I think the whole immigration system / process that affects these employees easily can turn them into slaves of the company they are currently working at... This can create an environment where everyone feels like they need to work ridiculous hours to be competitive.

The H1b's do deflate wages for everyone, they do generally work at the bottom of the pay scale and stay at a lower position. Some are also here on inflated or even fictional degrees, but then the US college quality is crap these days as well, but as narrow a focus as most QCT engineers have you could probably hire high school drop outs and train them in two days to flip bits.

I also suspect a lot of the racism and innane posting here comes from HR as a way to damage the board and hamper this communication channel.

Sorry. Most of the whiners on about h2b probably.can't even qualify to do the job. That's what happens when american kids get a degree in underwater basket weaving.

Uh yeah, no. H1B are part of the problem. A lot of justification to import a lot of low cost professionals to perform jobs that could be done by US citizens. Trust me, I know. QCOM campus is like walking through Hong Kong.
