Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Got a low rating this past review period. Hence concerned. Is there a possibility of getting into a Performance improvement plan ?

I got a low rating this past review period. Hence somewhat concerned. Is there a option of getting into a Performance improvement plan and possibly avert a layoff ?

OP: Similar issues have happened with a lot of people. It is not necessarily a performance issue. Sr. Directors often override managers' decisions regarding scores on reviews. Most of the people in our division who were downgraded refused to work 80+ hour weeks and weekends on the latest exercise in futility. Most were log term employees. And contrary to rumors, most were experts in their fields.

Which divisions are going to be affected. QCT or all?

If you got 1, they might offer to leave or PIP. But the PIP, they make it work best for the management . Till end you will be still thinking that you will be able to succeeded but it doesn't work.HR supports the management and are blinded. PIP is waste of time, stressful. instead invest time in searching for another job. Stop thinking Q is the only world.

Qualcomm is abusing the Employees and Labor Laws by utlizing phony PIP's.

"Is there a option of getting into a Performance improvement plan"? Yes but very low probability. It depends on the uniqueness of your skill set and how important your team is to the short term success (e.g.latest chip, linux/android etc...)

If you got a 1 in last review you will be in the initial layoff list together with contractors. Then they will target higher performers until they reach their goal.

Some of the better performers will also be in the initial layoff. Remember they will not layoff everyone all at once. As they beef up QIPL teams, they will layoff more.

It might not even be your manager at fault. Probably your manager got you a 3 during the deliberation. Then at a higher level (Sr Dir and above), they probably saw bunch of 3s in your past reviews and decided to give you 1 artificially in preparation for the layoffs. The upper management was told more than a year ago that there would be layoffs in the future and to prepare for it.

Then the manager is pressured into writing a bad review for you to justify the 1. The manager usually resists this for a bit because he does believe you have met the expectations, based on the input he got from your peers and customers. Most of the time the manager caves in and the Sr Director dictates what he should write for your review. If you met all your previous goals, and if you are staff or below, then you can tell them they have changed the rating after the fact and for political or (even worse) for the time you have made someone higher up look bad. Maybe you revealed something as part of your job. maybe you corrected that Ahole in a meeting or in person.

LOL, you don't need to be a low performer to be laid off; you really think someone will be doing their home work on what your past performance rating was? unfortunately that is not how lay off works. Seems like many on this board are going through this experience first time.

I got a 1 was not put on pip but was laid off. It was a set up and I saw it coming. Like being excluded from meetings talks being taken away. I worked with a very territorial , conniving and revenge minded person. I reported this persont's verbal abuse to HR. The next thing I knew my position was eliminated and I was asked to leave. The sad thing is this person went behind my back and wipe my reviews for my lazy managers. They bought it. I was gone. Again. HR is not they're for you.

I got a "1" rating. So, will they still offer me a PIP or lay me off (without a PIP)?

PIP takes too long. It seems that QC execs are going for the gold (gold for themselves).

What is the low rating? If it is not 1, then they will give you 1 in the next review unless you are doing a good enough job for a 5. Even if you are doing a good enough job for a 4 or 5 they will give you a 2. If you got a 1 last time they would have placed you in PIP already. If you got a 2 or 3. They will give you a 1 for next review and put you on PIP. Then depending on how many people they need to lay off, they might or might not lay you off in fall 2015.
