Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What I hope comes out of Boston Consulting Group's findings.

1) Professional engineers don't need two bosses. This could save significant money by eliminating redundancy.

2) Engineers waste far too much time in meetings. This should be limited to no more than 3 hours per week. If the redundant layer of useless management is removed, this is achievable.

3) CC lists on email need to be limited. Quit wasting engineers' time on weeding through useless shit.

Any other findings you'd like to see?

110096: If a Board of Directors takes an action and the stock price falls, there's always the possibility that someone who questions the CEO/Board's business judgment will file a shareholder's derivative action. By hiring "experts" the board insulates themselves from liability for many of these issues.

For items #2 and #3, I've wondered about this for the longest time when I worked there (luckily, decided to move on a while ago). IMHO, most of the senior management (Sr Director and above) are sincere and smart people, but why they can't identify this stuff themselves and address it is just a total travesty of their management responsibilities. Why it takes some outside consulting group like I've heard to maybe come in and look at this and report the obvious is just brain boggling. They could institute rules such as no meeting Weds or meetings only in the afternoons and so you get an uninterrupted morning to do your work, but meetings are just productivity killers. More enlightened companies already know this and take steps to reduce this kind of BS.

It needs to be independent third party. Otherwise they can just tell barry@jana that "yeah our internal review concluded those retention bonuses ARE needed and that we DO need 1000 people in hr. Later, bro"

Hiring consultants is a cover to get rid of someone that you don’t want to offend personally. That person might be a friend, who you have no use for any longer.

Pretty sad they have to hire consultants for hundreds of thousands of dollars to tell us how to cut costs at our own company . Doesn't qualcomm purport to hire the best? Why then can't the best figure it out without lining the pockets of yet more consultants.

BCG brings the axe and swings it so that the Qualcomm executives can have a clean conscience.

You know do know what strategic management consultants like BCG does, don't you? Great for business. Not so good news for employees., they are the ones that suggest things like "achieving synergies of cost by reducing redundancies"
