How many strikes does a Sr. Director get?

One Sr. Dir at work is notorious for being a nasty little bully. He regularly takes people into one-on-ones where he yells at them and generally berates them. Of course he never does this in front of anyone senior, and always picks on people at a lower level than him, so he has gotten away with it for years. Thing is, recently this has abruptly stopped and it got me thinking - how many warnings about behavior does a Sr. Dir. have to get before action is taken?

There two things that HR would not touch or tamper with, racial discrimination and sexual harassment. When the director used the chain metaphor with a black person, there would be trouble. It could not be taken back. The only time it is allowed is when there is exchange of money as a business transaction. In that case, either party can be chained or whipped.

HR here would say the black guy wasn't a team player

True story at another company. There was this asshole manager that use to go postal at people for random things. Complained about work quality and other things. Yelled at people. Many complained to HR about it who said they would talk to him. That's it. And it just went on and on. Finally one day our project was delayed and he had told everyone had to stay late and on the weekends to get it done, surprisingly totally calm and nonasshole-ish. And jokingly he said he would chain us to our desks if he had to until we got everything done. Ok, normally this guy was an asshole, but I knew what he said was in a joking way this time. However, one of my coworkers clearly want laughing be he was black. So he quickly said "what am I, you think I am your slave?". So here was this manager that was an asshole all this time, and I never have seen him so scared. Needless to say that coworker was able to transfer out of that group and got a promotion into a new group, and that manager was no longer a manager after that.

Rape might be overkill, but just say that you don't appreciate the sexual advances from your director, because you don't think he is a turnon because you still prefer traditional pussy versus putting from the rut (not that there is anything wrong with gays)....And you do know that many directors and vp's at the Q are gay.

I think you're better off taking a gopro camera into a meeting like this, and then posting the video on YouTube. Your career at the Q might be cut short, but if that's really what you're dealing with, I can't imagine why you would want to continue working under that environment, when clearly there are a bunch of better places you could be working. You can't put a price on dignity, unless you're really that financially desperate.

Lol. Like HR would care. The Korean EVP of QCT that was Sanjay's old pet use to do this regularly. I remember there were a couple of times this guy was yelling at someone saying to the effect that "this software is crap, my kids can't write better software than this POS, f this, f that..."And in every one of those cases, a complaint to HR was never followed up. The only relief came was when Sanjay went to Motorola. Since this guy every other one hated him, he was sort of squeezed out of his role. If that didn't happen, he'd probably still be there and HR wouldn't have done shit. I can't believe many of you are still naive and think HR is there to really help you. HR is there to benefit the company, not you. Short of some egregious thing, they won't do anything to benefit work/culture/environment if some senior director/vp/etc is acting up or just a plain asshole. The areas where they would step is (a) accusations of sexual harassment, racial harassment, gender harassment, or any other sort of harassment that is protected by law. Or (2) something illicit like drugs, fraud, etc. So if you really want to give a Sr Director who is an asshole a hard time, you're better off accusing him/her of sexual harassment or accuse him of being racially insensitive versus just being belligerent. HR won't do much if he's just belligerent. At most, they'll go talk to him and tell him that someone complained about him....And then you're really screwed.

If you get dragged into a one-on-one like that, get up and walk out on the clown. Then contact HR. That is all ...
