I cannot even bring myself to walk into a store to use them now, I get physically nauseous. It's to the point where my wife and I ended upvgiving them back.

That is so tacky and tasteless. Shame on you and on your wife not talking some sense into you.
I understand where you are coming from completely. You vote with your money -- if you can't support a company's policies, don't give them the benefit of your business. With big retailers like Target, it has impact on a national and global scale.
There are gift card exchanges out there where you can exchange one retailer's gift card for another - turn the Target cards in and get some you feel better about. I hope you can enjoy you gifts that way!
OP: I understand. It was months before I could see a Target building or a commercial without feeling sad, mad, betrayed, and rejected. I wouldn't / couldn't set foot in the store and gleefully ordered from Amazon and shopped Costco. I felt "That'll show them!" One day, after about 6 months, I reconciled myself to the fact that "My Target" has ceased to exist and somehow that enabled me to let go of the anger and hurt. But it took time to not have that sick feeling in my stomach. I shop there again now, when it's to my advantage, and still feel a little sad sometimes but I've moved on, I'm happy, and I have a better job. Ignore the jerks that responded.

Wow. That's really dramatic. Until you have to go to therapy because your last boss was verbally abusive and physically threatening, I say relax.

I can't imagine what the people who got them back must feel. "Yeah, thanks for the free money and all but we would like you to have these back. We know you thought we would like free money but we would much rather have a kitchen appliance that we will never use, or have three of that will sit in the garage until we give it to someone else. Thanks anyway!"
I get it but give it some time. Come 6 months you will wish you kept them. You could also use them online.
