They are not top heavy at all. Things happen quickly, they have ultra fast decision making process, no consensus bulding, etc. You reap rewards if you make good decisions, one or two mistakes and you are out. Very stressful but efficient. The good ones and lucky ones survive.

Amazon is not a retailer. They have a "pyramid" called Retail. That pyramid does not run the show. They are a technology company with Bezos and a very small group of leaders making most key decisions.
It doesn't matter if you don't have the right talents and great leaders to motivate them. So what if Target is top heavy?
I've heard Amazon's considering using drones to deliver some of their packages, out of this world dudes!
