Corinthian Colleges Update

Everest and WyoTech Locations Ordered to Cease Student Enrollment

Corinthian Colleges has reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Education on a plan to transition Heald College, Everest College, and WyoTech Technical Schools. This agreement took effect July 8, 2014 and is designed to protect students by allowing them to complete their studies or receive refunds where appropriate.

The agreement indicates that Corinthian intends to sell all California locations of Everest, Heald and WyoTech schools. However, if a sale is not negotiated for any particular campus, the campus would be "taught-out". In the event of a teach-out students will be informed of the change in status of the institution and provided a list of their options.

As of the effective date of the Operating Agreement, July 8, 2014, Corinthian Colleges are required to provide disclosures to all current and prospective students at all campuses. The disclosure describes the information as to the status of the school and the options and protections afforded to the students. As of this writing the exact language has not yet been approved by the Department of Education.

Please check this page along with the Bureau's Facebook and Twitter pages often for updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my school is sold? How will that affect me?

If your school is sold, your program will be continued as it is now. There should be no impact on your education.

What happens if my school closes? How will that affect me?

If your campus closes you will be provided information on your options that would include continuing your education at no additional cost to you, transferring to a different institution or a refund. You may wish to review the Bureau's Guide for Students Facing a School Closure page for information regarding the closure of Bureau-approved schools.

What is a teach-out? Can I participate in one?

Teach-out means either, the campus stops enrolling new students and continues to teach students to completion or, another school allows you to complete a similar or identical program of study for which you do not incur additional costs (outside of what you would have paid had you been able to complete your program at the school that closed). Only students attending Bureau-approved schools that close are eligible to participate in the teach-out. Teach-outs must be approved by the institution's accreditor.

Note: Heald College is not a Bureau-approved school

Do I have to participate in the approved teach-out?

No, participation in the teach-out is not mandatory. If a teach-out becomes eminent the school will meet with students and explain the options available in lieu of a teach-out.

Can I transfer to a new school now?

Yes, students may withdraw from a school at any time, however, you may or may not be eligible for a refund. Please refer to your enrollment agreement and catalog regarding the refund policy.

Will my units/hours be transferrable?

Students should contact potential schools for assistance in determining if units/hours are transferrable. The next school you attend will evaluate your transcripts to determine whether any of your units/hours are transferrable.

Can I get my loan discharged?

For information on student loan discharges please contact your lender.

Can I get my tuition reimbursed?

If a student withdraws from an institution you are not eligible for tuition reimbursement. You may be eligible for a pro rata refund of prepaid tuition. However, if the school closes you may be eligible for tuition reimbursement from the school or, if the school is unable to pay, you may apply for tuition reimbursement from the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) if you are eligible. Please check your enrollment agreement for eligibility criteria.

Note: Heald College is not a Bureau-approved school. Heald College students are ineligible for reimbursement from the STRF.

What is the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF)?

The STRF assists students enrolled in a Bureau-approved school who suffer an economic loss due to the school's closure. For additional information on STRF eligibility, please visit the Guide for Students Facing a School Closure page.

How do I obtain a copy of my transcripts?

You can obtain a copy of your student records from your current school. The Bureau recommends that any request made to an institution be done in writing. All students should keep copies of their transcripts, enrollment agreement, proof of training document, student loan information, school payments, and any other pertinent information regarding your enrollment and attendance.

@healdstudent no one who has real info who works at heald is allowed to share it--most of the staff is as concerned about their future as you. The best thing you can do is research the various schools in your area and what articulation agreements they have. Transfer of credits is always up to the receiving institution, so you will probably need to talk to them if you want to know what you can and cannot transfer. Do the research on what happens when the school closes. You can find that on the Department of Education website although the link is posted all over this site as well. Remember that the people on here don't know anything more than you do unfortunately.

@300 do you work for Heald or do you know something that you would like to share?

One or the other will happen. The last I heard was that Heald will probably not finish out the quarter.

@290 is this going to be happening at all Heald locations? Do you know a time frame??

Part of the deal with a teach-out is that the school is required to inform students of their options. Right now, the question is whether there's going to be a teach-out or immediate bankruptcy.

Thanks for sharing a true link. This applies only to Wyotech and Everest. It is stated twice in the document that Heald is not a Bureau approved school, which would lead me to believe that any teachout plans for Heald will be determined with the Dept. of Ed.
