Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

There is an entire world out there waiting

So... I just go my 3rd offer from a company that focuses on software. And man, the vibes at these companies is just awesome. Young people, with no pissy attitude, no baggage from years of working at a shit job competing on cost..no outsourcing bullshit. People that just want to build cool shit... I am sold. Adios dinosaur Q! Good luck competing on who can do a chip for the cheapest cost squeezing every penny out of cost. It's been fun while the innovation was still a big driver. Not so much anymore. Grind away!

The people at QC are just either too passive, scared, or apathetic to care. Congratulations on the job offers and good luck. You will be doing much better than those that remain.

Well Steve did get rid of our group but fortunately I xfered to another group with a few others. And have been patiently waiting and vesting for something better to come along. Which finally happened.... My first role at the new company? Convince the new company to use a better connectivity combo chip. Shouldn't be that hard... Since I know ours stink.

OP - Do you really work for Q? Or you an angry laid-off person?

QC’s technology and business foundation was built on CDMA over 3 decades. It has reached a plateau in milking that technology. TAM is fixed as price erosion offsets increasing volume. It is clear that there is no more CDMA grand slam, but just building more chips. Chip business is going to dilute QC’s profitability, and JANA is right to push for spin-off.

106614 - Can you say which companies?

...connectivity chips are only as good as people/companies can figure out a way to use it...the problem is, not many people have figured that out beyond phones and cars. And that sort of creativity isn't going to come from the Q.. Especially not under the current leadership. Steve even emphasized he wants to focus on chip development mainly...So void of killer products, what's going to drive connectivity chip sales? That's right, your lunch will depend on one of the companies I end up working for..since the q won't be the one finding uses for how these connectivity solutions will be used. It doesn't have the people left to think about these ideas, nor did it have a great track record of creating killer applications when it had the people when the were thinking about it...

IOT is called marking fluff. The Q isn't going to come up with any noteworthy products. That's why it invests in startups that produces real products that end up going public...like fitbit....Q is incapable if doing a product by itself, especially after Steve got rid most if the software apps team and ventures that use to work on it. Alljoyn is a joke. Not many companies use it in embedded IOT products. Too heavy...hardware is a commodity now. And that's how other companies view connectivity. Just ask google.

@106621: Vest what? The absolutely lame RSU grants that the Q gives us? That's hardly motivation to stay.

Actually I start out with 4weeks of vacation. Bigger rsu grants at a public company and no offices in china or Bangalore. Normal hours since I had to move my last interview because no one was working past 6pm, and no one got in before 9am...lol... Better hours than QCT, where you go in before the sun rises. And leave after the sun sets, seeing moonlight if you are lucky.
