I've always wondered why the solution that produced the most revenue for OPNET kept on being minimized by Riverbed.

Mike S. wants to destroy ARX in favor of AIX because thats the kind of dumba55 he is. He needs to go back to CA where his stupidity belongs. He has no clue compared to Alain and Marc.
I don't fully agree. Based on R&D resources invested (look at the AppInternals R&D headcount), it is quite clear that Riverbed was not close at all in being "all in" with AppInternals. AppInternals itself is however is becoming increasingly strategic as Gartner has been shifting its definition of APM away from agent-less solutions.
That being said, I agree AppResponse did not see much advancements since the acquisition (half-migration to a WebUI, patched-on Shark module, minimal integration with Steelheads)..it is however still a solid product that is a leader in the market. IMO the natural progression of AppResponse that would have allowed for more growth:
1) deeper into layer-7 decodes: Citrix, SOAP, SAP, VoIP, FIX, CIFS, Lync, MQ, DNS, DHCP, LDAP etc..
2) play better with deeper integrations with Riverbed's own AppInternals, Splunk, Sumologic, SCOM, Solarwinds
3) get the virtual AppResponse appliances to be more on par with their physical counterparts
