Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

2015 Layoffs at Teradata

Does anyone have info on potential reorg and layoffs that might be happening later in Q3 2015 at Teradata? I heard conflicting stories, some of my friends still work there, I left in 2011 but still keep track of what's happening with this once great company. You'll see many rumors on the web, so please make sure you are very careful about what you perceive as right or wrong

"Dude the layoffs are coming. The real bad ones and the kind we have not seen before."

Jan 2016, Anonymous

Seeing as how that didn't happen, I assume you mean the imaginary kind.

Anyone who works at TerribleData more than 6 months is optimistic. Anyone who works at TerribleData more than a year is delusional. Anyone who works at TerribleData more than 2 years is just lazy looking to collect a paycheck.

Be careful with long term investments in TD because who know where they will be in 12 months.

I interviewed at TD in San Diego about a year ago and it was the most chaotic, unprofessional event I've experienced in the last decade. I was to meet with 4 separate hiring managers. The first guy didn't understand why he had to be dragged into the interview process because his department wasn't hiring; he decided not to participate. Unfortunately, he didn't share this with anyone. When I arrived at the security desk, I waited for this guy for nearly 20 minutes because he didn't return the call and nobody knew where he was, so we moved on to interview #2. This manager came down to meet me in the lobby and he was all pissed off because he thought I was just arriving to the interview 20 minutes late; the spineless security guy didn't explain to him that ACTUALLY I'd been there for half an hour. Needless to say that interview went horribly. Interview #3 kept me waiting in a conference room for 20 minutes then dashed in with a clutch of papers and began asking interview-related questions from them. Not one of them had anything to do with the role I applied for and were stupid and irrelevant; he obviously was late because he just finished Googling, "Top 20 Job Interview Questions" or before the interview. He hadn't even read my resume. The #4th interview was OK but by then I was so disgusted with TD I cut it short. All this is to say if they are going out of business, I can TOTALLY see why.

Who acquired TMA?

Most infrastructure layoffs are complete, but expect additional layoffs once TMA is sold. The business continues to decline, so don't be surprised if more RIF's occur (unfortunately not at the leadership level)

I was a planner at TD and it was March of 2014 that I said "if they start cutting into headcount, we aren't coming back from it." By August of 2015, they had laid off over 100 people in CS and the salesforce. I constantly got inquiries from upper management about headcount and how much we'd save if we cut X number of people. People--- you are nothing but numbers to them. THAT IS IT. Do not try to be loyal to this company- they will get rid of you in a heartbeat to save money. That is how dire the situation is. Find better employment as soon as you can.

Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, IBM, SAS and HP are all looking for skilled engineers for their appliances. Presales Solution Architects and sales support engineers should look for jobs with them and I am confident they will land a role very quickly. Startups like MongoDB, Hortonworks, are looking as well.

Professional services associates should apply to the many jobs advertised with Capgemini, Deloitte, Accenture, KPMG, Oracle, SAP, SAS, CGI, TCS, HCL, HP, IBM etc. under information management, data warehousing, business intelligence. Industry all over the country needs Teradata services resources. Start applying if you have not already done so. Its time to move on.

I reached out to Teradata competitors on LinkedIn and one of them moved forward with me. I made it through two rounds of interviews. When I get the offer I am moving on and never coming back.

Sales and Solution architects are being let go. I know of several of each who have been let go today. Had one solution architect in California tell me she was told she will get the better of years of service or grade level. We shall see if that's true.

Caching means making use of current period of data rather than putting data into a very large proportion which is sometime costly to process then regularly. This is in Hadoop application laymans term.

@B8mLN8E-4ekmb

"The move is toward Hadoop and using data techniques such as caching to handle short-term storage. trouble is, SQL Server costs a helluva lot less than TD and caches just fine on inexpensive, virtual servers. "

Can you describe what you mean when you say cacheing?

Suggestions:

  • no reference letter; it doesn't matter.

  • employees rarely have contracts and a severance will not be in there.

  • don't speak with clients. not your job. walk and find something else to do. take this as one of the best opportunities you have had and view it as such.

Ask for as much as possible in exit. Cellphone bill (maybe phone as well), internet, bonuses owed, etc.

btw, some folks have already been informed on fri...informally. Both keeping job and losing.

@B8mLN8E-4ftqj Reschedule the meeting for after client hours. A real HR employee would never stay until after 5.

@B8mLN8E-4ftqj: that sucks,

  • Make sure that you get a reference letter from your manager.

  • Check your contract to see what it says about severance pay.If your contract states it is service based not grade based then insist on that. They cannot alter the terms mid-way without you signing on it. It is illegal in many states.

  • Reach out to the contacts at your customers and let them know.

All the best.

I received a meeting invite from my manager and noticed HR lady on the invitation for Tuesday for a 30 minute call. I am worried now as I suspect getting RIF. Is there anything I can or should do prior to Tuesday that would help me if it is my last day with Teradata?

@4eeqr and @4ejcr - a better analogy would be BMW vs Kia - BMW is significantly more expensive but offers better features, materials and craftsmanship is better, etc.

"Desktop applications are not the norm they are the exception."

Web apps are very popular but the desktop is not an exception. I am a developer, both web and desktop. Both exist in a very healthy state. Default usage for most corp types is desktop (MS Office) and many of the big tools have no hope to be web-based anytime soon. What is happening is hybrid apps.

Move on to something that will impact TD soon. The rise of storage that is almost as fast as memory and costs the same as disk. What then?

When is this happening? This year, already announced by Intel/Micron.

Even in the wildest dream scenario, where big data becomes a method of reporting on data in place, never transformed, you are talking about such a HUGE amount of in memory work that has to be done every time you look at it!

there is so much wrong with this statement, i wouldn't know where to start from.

@B8mLN8E-4dtmr: symptom of the problem this company has, too many people stuck with outdated thinking.

the data only actually becomes useful once the analysis is fed back into a DWH via a connector

This would be funny if it wasn't so tragic and leading to people losing their jobs during christmas and at the start of the new year.

The Big data ecosystem is not dependent on a DWH to run its analysis. It is not only for data storage, it has not been for data storage for at least the last decade. Just because TDC does not understand this and does not have the people (ThinkBig, what a joke) to understand this, does not mean the rest of the world doesn't.

HTML5 didn't make everything obsolete

Actually, it did, except for increasingly small niche areas. The default platform for application delivery is now the web or mobile. Desktop applications are not the norm they are the exception.
