Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

New Hires?

Any news? I am supposed to start at the company this summer and am getting a little nervous due to the layoff situation...

I was laid off in Feb. You do not want to waste your time with this place. The management is horrible, the politics are just a little bit less then House of Cards and only the truly sleazy, dishonest snakes get promoted.

I heard it was now up to a 1/3 of the workforce?

What better opportunities do you speak of? I'm not sure what role the original poster will be going into, but if it is oil-specific, a) there are essentially no operators hiring right now and b) if you remember when you were a new hire, E&P's (during the good times) do the vast majority of the recruiting during the fall and most only hire out of their intern pools. So if Marathon or others do retract offers, best case scenario for the op, full time employment is 1+ years away, IF oil prices rebound soon, which is looking increasingly doubtful.

I agree that it is wise to not assume that the companies will honor their offers, but the first response is not helpful in the least. New hires are perhaps the most vulnerable to these wild market swings, since they don't have any skills to market themselves with in an upturn and will no longer be considered new graduates.

I don't have any information on the status of new hires at Marathon, but I can say that the company would likely be loathe to do anything to damage university relations imo. Keep your head up and hope for the best.

Here's to better times.

You are wise to inquire, I was Laid Off in February. My response would be to RUN and seek other more promising places.
