Two years ago I was approached by two managers on Canada teams about two different positions, both would be promotions for me and both were great steps for me to take in my career. I had been in my current position for about 2.5 years and approached my manager about the two opportunities. Her response: "no, I've had too much turnaround on my team these last few months". I was frustrated but let the two managers know that my manager would not let me go. One manager shook his head and gave up, the other manager persistently called my manager for a month (she didn't respond to one of those phone calls). Finally, after he and I talked again and he explained that he would really like me to join their team but could not get through to my manager and I told him I would approach her again. I approached her once more and received the same answer. I told her, "thank you for making my decision easier then. I've been passionate about moving forward with Target but I've also been passionate in going into the healthcare field. I'm giving you my two weeks notice and going back to school."
It is now two years later and I am a few months short of receiving a second Bachelors degree in Nursing. I moved away from Minneapolis for school, met someone and got engaged and haven't looked back until now, when I have been hearing about the layoffs. I am now thanking God for not letting my boss let me move on, if I had moved on I would have been laid off with all of the other Canada team members, I wouldn't be pursuing a career that I love and probably wouldn't have met my fiance. Now is not the time to cry or be fearful about what you're losing, it is a time to look forward to the opportunities in front of you. Everything happens for a reason. Do something you've always dreamed about but didn't think was possible. Do what you REALLY want to do. It's not that scary to go back to school, this is my second bachelors degree and I wouldn't change it for the world. The age span in my nursing classes ranges from early 20's to 58 years old, don't let anything get in the way of your dreams. Good luck to you all.
