Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Future Employment

This might seem like an asinine question in a time like this, but given these layoffs were not clearly performance-oriented (or, at least not heavily so), what is the likelihood that some of our displaced colleagues could be rehired in time? Or, from HR’s perspective, do those TMs become classified as some sort of damaged goods?

It's probably the case that many of those affected would be reluctant to pass through our front doors again, and that many will go on to bigger and better things. But I also know my group lost a lot of fantastic talent on Tuesday; talent that I’d welcome back on my team, given the opportunity.

I agree with almost everything Targeteer stated. Target taught me how to see though fake people right away. My "BS" meter was honed during my time at the big T.

80450 - Amen! Perhaps the best post I've seen thus far. My husband and I both left Target almost 10 years ago and between the two of us, have worked at 3 other organizations since (2 being large retailers); me 5 years (and counting at present) at each and my husband 10 at what is a Fortune 50 company. In all three organizations, we have seen former Target employees come and go just as quickly. To be frank, after years at the beloved mother ship, they couldn't hack it elsewhere. When a computer wasn't doing their job and a good portion of the week wasn't spent in GTKYs or captaining an FFF event, they simply couldn't survive. This was not an isolated incident - all 3 places, same story and I'm not talking 1 or 2 people. Don't get me wrong, Target has an incredible training program and it builds a fantastic foundation for future but people learn to operate within a machine and outside of that machine, the going is tough. God forbid there isn't a "Best Method" to guide you! I wish everyone nothing but the best but many people are in for a rude awakening. And before the haters start to hate, we left on our own accord, both with the "fast trackers" label attached so our departure was certainly on our own accord.

Perhaps some of this is performance related. Just because you worked for Target doesn't automatically make you "fantastic talent" ... So much time in middle management is wasted in company sanctioned socializing and pointless "status meetings" rather than doing actual work. You can afford to cut people if they're taking home full-time pay for half a day's work. I think some former employees are due for a rude awakening when they get jobs that expect more productivity.

Of course there are very hard working people who lost their jobs. But the reality is that "Target culture" is softball compared to what else is out there. It's no wonder so many people liked working for them.
