Being on the "bench" is someone who has not been placed on the team due to training or headcount

So is "bench" the same thing?

At its inception the "swat" positions were intended to be skilled team members who would temporarily backfill for another team member who may be out on maternity leave or a position temporarily open while permanent hiring was in process. It was valued within Target that a short-term open position was a challenge to fill with off-the-street temps because of the specialized nature of the position and Target. This allowed for someone to step in and be up-to-speed quickly and maintain the continuity of workflow. Think of these positions as "generalists." The initial intended purpose was a great idea and effective in its intent. This history reaches back some 15+ years ago.
