It seems many PG17 were let go. My frustration is with the fact that they did NOT cut redundant positions in my area. Instead, the people in my dept who were laid off had very unique roles in the company and now there is a glaring gap. Those people had skills and knowledge that the rest of us do not and now we are scrambling to learn how to do the things they did just to keep the lights on. I was on board with removing redundant positions, but that is not what happened at all. It seems there was no strategy behind this besides pay grade and tenure.

Believe me. Those chosen for layoff was more dictated by financials than anything else. Target has had a practice of this for years to minimized future obligation to these employees (pensions, etc.).
Maybe these unique roles are no longer value added? If they have no benefit to supporting the stores then they should go? Some may need to be reminded that HQ is there to support stores.
Maybe next time, they should do a survey of TMs. Vote for who you believe add value or don't add value. This way, they get it right and there is no gaps after layoff. Remaining TMs will work like nothing happens. Target will realize record profit. For the record, I swear I saw a pig flew by TPN south side.
To the contrary, it may have been a very strategic and purposeful move. Eliminating some of the higher skilled knowledge workers forces the remaining team members who weren't contributing as much to step up to the plate. In addition to lowered costs, this strategy will also expose people who really shouldn't be in their current position. That may include you, OP.
808, good answer. You are right on point.
No doubt that there are now gaps. Otherwise, they have to come back with another round of layoffs. The question is, who is going to step up and help fill the gaps. If it is not you, they will find someone else. The day of 'it's not my job is over'.
Clearly they selected the wrong 'layer.' Perhaps you should offer your job as tribute so that they can rehire the ones with the skills and knowledge you mentioned
You're not the only one. We're all dealing with the aftermath. The bottom line is that we all have a choice. If you don't like it then leave. The truth is there are many leaders of people who don't have skills and your post and complaint about skills and knowledge leaving is proof of why drastic change was necessary. Stop complaining and help lead your team through this sad time!
