Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

ICYMI: Jodee's Email From Yesterday; Came Out @ 9:30am. Right when our email was supposed to be shut off.

The following received this message: all global HQ team members + all officers.

As you know, we’re making significant organizational changes. And this morning, difficult conversations are taking place across many teams, resulting in the departure of 1,700 of our colleagues, in addition to the 1,400 open positions we’ve eliminated over the past few months.

Because these are our friends and peers, I know many of you are wondering what Target is doing to help make this transition easier for them. They will receive a comprehensive separation package that includes more than 15 weeks of pay plus additional severance based on their years of service. They’ll also receive six months of benefits coverage at the Target team member rate, outplacement support and access to free executive education courses.

It’s difficult to say goodbye to people we care about. And then find out your boss has changed, or you have a new team, or your role is changing. All these changes are happening simultaneously, which is a lot to absorb all at once. It will require a new level of leadership, creativity and accountability from all of us.

We all have a role to play in shaping the new normal and redefining what it means to work at Target HQ – and what it means to be part of a transformational growth company. You’ll hear more about our plans for growth from Brian Cornell at a team gathering in Target Hall next week.

While difficult, transformation demands the very best we all have to give – to ourselves, to each other and to this incredible company.

There is no way to deliver this news on a large scale all in one meeting. If it had been done that way we would be complaining about how impersonal it was conducted. Each package was personalized rather than have you pick up a packet on the way out and fill in the blanks. If that had been done we would have said, "They don't even know my name!" The reality and surprise of the rif hit us hard and sudden. It wasn't comfortable for those of us let go nor for those of us who stayed behind. It either prompted feelings of embarrassment or anger. There really are no words to say that will change feelings. Only actions can change feelings and I will choose today to make the best of it. Tomorrow I will have to find the strength to choose happiness over giving someone else power over my identity, attitude, feelings, and choices.

I went out for breakfast. Actually felt really nice. Someone said before I went, "not sure we're supposed to leave." I thought, what are they going to do...lay me off?

I 100% agree. I really wish the elimination/severance meetings had been done at once. The time between the 8:45 meeting and the actual severance meeting was brutal. My coworkers left behind just stood around awkwardly while I packed up my desk. Just enough time for them to make ridiculous comments about how much work they were going to have. I just wanted to leave, so I said goodbye to those I wanted to and then holed up in an enclave for a while. I pray that I never have to go through something like that again.

I got this before my email and computer were shut off and it was like a slap in the face. I was part of the "they" and not the "us" or "we" anymore. What's worse was the 2+ hours that I had to wait around to get my severance package after hearing the initial news of my position being eliminated at 8:45. This could have been executed in such a better way.
