Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Where is the leadership?

Today my position, and many others from my team, was eliminated. Considering my job centered around expense optimization (through real operational improvements and new revenue sources NOT workforce cutting)- this was a bit ironic since the company will now be losing millions more than what they would ever be paying me. But I digress-

I am actually very content with leaving at this point. I am not angry or bitter and actually feel very hopeful about next steps. I feel worse for those who are left. What I am truly disappointed about is the lack of real leadership at the top levels of Target. While I don't know Brian, Kathy, Jodee, John, etc. or expect them to be perfect- I feel there are some basic leadership qualities that are totally absent. Where is the servant leadership mentality that inspires your team? Why hasn't a single one of these millionaires come forward to offer a pay cut for themselves? Where is the unscripted, genuine, voice of true leaders who put others before themselves? I don't think any one person or group of people is totally responsible for the mistakes Target has made. And I don't have anything against capitalism or big business. I just think a real leader is the first to make a sacrifice. I don't trust their leadership, respect their character as leaders, or want to invest my time and talent in their leading. Please post if you agree so that the message is heard!

looking out for #1 is not a concept that built or country/company or will maintain our country/company.

I read a great quote once - Love has it's own logic

I feel that applies here and I totally agree with your comments on leadership

Think about it. For the everyone in the company, it's a job. Why would they offer to cut their salary. For what advantage to them? It's a romantic idea, but the reality is -- everyone is looking out for #1.

Great post...agree 100%. A true leader is one you want to follow in the good times AND the bad.

It true and i really wonder the future strategy. It always emphasize on talent developement and personal training for transferable skills. But the layoff action reflects mind changing, no reallocation of employee but just lay off. I wonder if it is really beneficial to Target uniquness and how we differentiate from other in future

So true. My DMM and SVP never once reached out to the team this past week. All yesterday the DMM hid in her office worried she was on the chopping block. She was safe. I and two others from my team got let go today. Only after she is safe and we are cut does she finally emerge in tears to say how sorry she is and how it was beyond her control. I believed that, but I also never once felt like I had leader or anyone who had our back through any of this.
