Today is a bad day for Target. But it's a good day for corporate America. As an ex-Targeteer, let me tell you how it is out here:
Fortune 500 companies are loaded with cookie cutter MBAs, pleated khakis, linear thinking, focus groups and minimal inspiration. Most days, "targeting millennials" feels like fishing for whales in Lake Calhoun. Volunteering is an annual one-day effort, forced by the organization - not a team building opportunity. Warm, fuzzy, well-funded, community-based efforts exist, but they aren't a priority. Happy hour? Nope. Rallying around a vision from the top? Good luck.
You're probably rolling your eyes. Maybe you read that paragraph and muttered to yourself, "you just described Target." But trust me, you can't understand. Not yet. We need you. We need what you'll soon realize is the magic of the bullseye. We need you to finally be the boss your boss never was. We need you your intuition. We need your kool-aid.
Good luck today.
