...when we seem to spend more time with social hours' coffee meetings, meetings to discuss meetings, more cube contests than humanly possible and so on? Our culture turned into an unproductive social club with weekly popularity contests. I think many if us have to admit this....

Not true about TCW. I've worked there 8 years...and didn't start getting promoted until last year when I started participating in FFF events and coffee crap...oh, and going to happy hour with TDLs. Ridiculous.
Was my advanced degree holding me back?
I worked as a contractor in CC and all we did was produce real valuable work that a Manager would pick up after a 3-hour FFF event and present as their own. Just to give you the magnitude of lack of skills in Target, they needed THREE people to absorb the work I did when my contract came to an end.
That certainly isnt the atmosphere at TCW...we actually work here
I would have to agree. I see this in TTS at CC every single day.
