Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Sacrifice myself?

I was praying that it would be me and not my coworkers but I was spared. Is there any way I can offer up my position? Anyone I can talk to about it? I know I sound crazy but I wanted this to be my out. I need that severance. I can't just quit.

OP here - I just had a baby and I desperately want to stay with my little one but can't afford to quit and be a stay at home mom. The severance could have afforded me a couple more precious months of raising my own child rather than paying some stranger half my salary a week to watch baby. That's the reason. It is selfish but I'm admitting that!

I can't say I wanted to be one that got cut but it does bring up the question - does Target have a volunteer/early retirement option in these processes?

260, isn't that what you were doing before? Cut out the coffees, GTKYs, and b.s. statuses about your personal brand and you make back like 10 hours of non-productive work time where you did a half ass job.

You don't just quit if you hate your job. You go in every day and do a seriously half ass job!

Agree. I have syrvivor's guilt and am also in a better position to be unemployed than those that got let go. I weirdly wish it had been me instead.

I am not the OP but here is a potential scenario, happened to me maybe 10 years ago. Let' say you have 50K in debt on credit cards, maybe you went to school, were sick, had a child that you cannot afford, whatever. Now you reached your limit, the banks know that, they jack up the rates on you to 24%. Now you are paying 1,000 every month in interest, and you are getting nowhere because your principal remains the same. your salary is let's say 100K, and buy the time you pay off child care, house/rental, cars, you are left with nothing. So, let's say your best buddy offers you a job at 110K, it's a smaller company, unstable, you'd jump but you are afraid. Now, with your tenure at Target, let's say you get 26 weeks of pay, that's 50K, after taxes you get to keep 35K, and you go work for your friend immediately, so you need that severance. That 35K saves you from the interest, and you are left with 15K which you can repay in two years or so. Now you can breathe. If you leave on your own, you bank the 15K differential on salary increase, but you do not get to keep the severance which was lucrative. OK, I hope this makes sense.

Just quit and spare others who want to work. Sounds like you are just as greedy as the leaders who made those cuts today.

You should just quit then. You already are taking up space for those that want to be spared.

My thoughts too Anonymous79150. OP had me all the way up until the last two statements....'I need that severance. I can't just quit.'

So tell us OP, why exactly do you need this severance? What's wrong with continuing to work for a few more months? And if you can't quit, why not? For those of you who piled on with "me too", would you care to elaborate?

This post makes no sense, the numbers do not add up.

'I need that severance.'

Why? Why not just work through whatever date would be equivalent to the severance package you would have received?

'I can't just quit.'

Why not?

The short answer is probably not. My guess is they want people like you to leave and not pay you severance

Yeah I desperately tried to get to the front of the line for layoffs last February and I was spared. Then it just looked like I was a shitty employee. I ended up quitting.
