Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Be human, not just professional

If you are invited to a room and informed your services are no longer needed you have 100% permission to be human in your response. If th at means sobbing, screaming, and wailing, so be it. You have experienced a trauma that has been compared to involuntary divorce and to death. That it brings a human element to what is otherwise scripted to be sanitary experience, so be it.

If you are one who is not-invited, be empathetic and don't make it about you. If you know someone well, perhaps surreptitiously slip your (non work) contact info to them. If you know them only at work, acknowledge the mutual loss of future interaction but don't make it about you (particularly if they are busy trying to pack to get the h--- out of the building. If they are venting, be an ear for them. Don't add, dismiss to what is being said. It's about them and not you,

As I'm told, there is life after Target. I hope to not have to discover that on less than my own terms but I know it is there.

If you are reading this and you have been impacted, please accept my best wishes on your next journey/adventure. May the road to your next position be short, the rewards high, and the destination pleasant.

They are very empathetic and caring. However, yes they do have to stick to the script for legal reasons. It happens very fast, you come in, they read the script, you go over the severance worksheet, they tell you there is a bunch more information in the packet, and then there is time for questions. Note however that you will be so jolted that your mind likely won't be able to come up with any questions until you are back at your desk. So maybe start a list of questions you may have and bring it with you to the meeting so you are prepared.

Did the people handling it show any emotion, or did they just read their script and then leave?

Bring your own tissues. I was part of the Canada layoffs and brought some to "the meeting", glad I did because they didn't provide any. It totally sucks and the people that delivered the message were very professional and handled it very well.

Just a thought... the Salvation Army and/or the Red Cross might take the dogs if they are clean. They try to get a soft toy into the hands of children following a disaster like fire, flood, tornado, etc. to calm, comfort, distract the child. There was a large population of homeless Bull's Eyes after one of the recent RIFs; it would be nice to place them where they can do some good. On the other hand, many years from now you may wish you had kept this TGT paraphernalia.

If it follows the pattern of Canada, you'll be informed, allowed to pack yourself, meet for final briefing and then allowed to exit the building by a set time. I'm not aware of any 1:1 escort. If you feel a high degree of certainty of not being around, you could take advantage of today or Monday evening to pre-pack, bring stuff home. If you have worked long enough that you have a plethora of Target dogs, knickknacks and are inclined to trash them ... please don't (or at least not the dogs). Consider donating them to a local charity for children or women's shelter. While they may represent painful experience to you know, it is possible they could bring (even momentary) happiness to a child enduring a life much harder than yours.

Well said. Can we also stop talking about women's butts and about who you want to do. Disgusting.

For those who have been previoulsy let go or knoww the routine; are you walked out of the building by someone or are you allowed to walk out on your own with your dignity intact?
