Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Expecting women

I am looking for honest opinions/feedback on this one. I will be going into my third trimester and will most definitely be losing my job.

Anyone have experience with this situation? Or in the same boat? How did you handle it? Is it best to wait until after baby is born to begin the hunt? Even though it's not my preference? Thanks!

If you are in your third trimester, a 60 notice of layoff will take you to approximately your due date. Look at the amount of your severance and add six months to it for unemployment compensation. Icky situation for everyone, particularly if you have a medical condition or pregnancy, but the timing of everything might be manageable for you.

Yes, start networking and looking for work now. Once the baby comes, you will (rightfully) reprioritize everything for your sweet darling and no longer have time or energy for a job hunt. Make contact now with temp agencies, head hunters, and contract agencies. Give then your availability. There's bound to be some short term contractor work in the meantime and they will work towards your post-baby start date. Remember, they get paid when you're placed so they are going to be more flexible. Once you get back in the groove you can reevaluate and look for your dream scenario with a little cushion. ...Also run your severance contract past a lawyer before you sign. Collect any evidence that TGT knew of your pregnancy. Most likely not a factor in your dismissal, but might be able to get your insurance extended or maternity leave paid out. An extra 6 weeks would make it worth it.

Best of luck to you! It is a shame Target has let go pregnant women in the past without any regard for her and baby's wellbeing. Last year's layoff, everyone I knew who was visibly pregnant got let go and it just seemed too coincidental....

My last company would never go there, even if the woman hasn't officially gone on FMLA, because they didn't want the risk to get sued for discrimination. I hear some companies will still hire women in their third trimester so up to you if you want to look now or just wait until after the baby. I hope you will be able to fall back on a spouse's insurance in the mean time. Good luck!

Google "Laid Off While Pregnant: How to Handle Being Let Go From Your Job While Expecting" (sorry I couldn't link you; links don't work on this site). Lots of good info from a women that went through it. Sending you strength and peace
