If you get let go, what would you want to do next? This would certainly be a kick in the pants for me to do something totally different.

When I read the question in this post earlier today I hadn't thought of making plans. In the meantime I've been thinking of taking a road trip to New Orleans, have a cup of coffee down at Jackson Square and watch the sunrise on lake pontchartrain... then come back to face 'what comes next'. It's easy for me, no one depends on me for food/shelter - a road trip will be a good way to cleanse my mind of all the poison that's been building since Tuesday. Maybe I'll stop in Clarksdale, MS on the way back and see if the Devil still waits at the Crossroads... No wait, he relocated to MN.
I think I will stay home until fall when the kids go back to school. Earn money from severance, save on day care, spend time with kids, be out side. Sounds good to me.
I experienced a layoff with my first company out of college. Much different experience then being single and renting than potentially now with family and motgage. I know debt/student loans play a factor. A bit more worried now with more than my mouth to feed.
My advice. Think about what you want to do and where. I've been lucky to work at a few companies to get some different perspectives. That may be a bit of a difficult adjustment for the tgt lifers. Also use your support system, family and friends. There is a bit of a hit to the ego if laid off, but keep open with those you care about and care about you while you get to your next experience in this thing called life.
I will ride unemployment while trying to develop a plan for my own business, trying to get into export/import from West Africa
I am only a few years into my career and only a few hours from home. I think this would kick me to one of the coasts for a new job market. Just because it's good for me to try new things. Sucks that this is happening but I'm trying to spin it positively!
