Should I take next Tuesday off. I'm concerned there might be people who will be disgruntled or even worse...violent.

If you are worried don't be - Target will probably pay for off duty police officers to be there.
Whoever becomes violent or aggressive when this happens is going to have a much tougher time finding a job because of the referral. Target security is stationed. You just need to play it calm, breathe, take the money and find a much better job. Target is not worth a fight.
The security guys are always involved with these things.

If anything, you'll see a lot of crying... at the most. We've endured two or three layoffs int he past 3 years.
Layoffs happen in companies all of the time. What Target is going through is not in any way unusual for those in the indusrty or any other. Outside of stereotypical postal worker references, when is the last time you heard of a white collar violent occurrence? You are fine.
