Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Breathe in, breathe out, move on...

1.) LinkedIn: Learn it, use it, and love it. It is the biggest and most usefull tool out there right now, and corporate recruiters are falling over themselves trying to integrate it into their own systems (via Workday, Oracle, etc.) Indeed.com is still ok, but a lot of the older sites have become trolling grounds for lower-tier recruiters.

2.) If it looks bad for your area: Walk (don't run) to the nearest exit. Seriously: There are lots of great opportunities out there right now, but it would be best to try and "beat the crowd" and get out before the wave of unemployed Target folks hit the streets.

3.)Forward any documentation you would like to use for references or work examples to your personal email. (Make sure you redact any reference to "Target" or other sensitive information.)

4.) Depending on your area of expertise, look at the more reputable recruiters: Baker Tilly, Robert Half, SALO, etc. Be open to perm and consulting gigs. (If you are a decent worker, you will have very little downtime between gigs.) Sure they get paid for placing you, but they have their own reputations to protect so they are a little more thorough. Avoid out-of-town recruiters: They truly are only interested in warm bodies they can throw somewhere.

5.) Keep calm and carry on: There is life outside of Spot's Kennel Club, and it is pretty sweet. Good luck!

I couldn't agree with this post more. I know of a Target employee who received an unsolicited job offer from another employer last month, and she took the job and is now at a new employer rather than at Target anticipating layoffs. Guess where they found her? LinkedIn. Get a good photo, update your profile and job experience, and spend some time showcasing yourself on LinkedIn. It's free, what have you got to lose?

I do not work at Target, I formerly was a consultant there. I keep my LinkedIn profile up to date and I am constantly receiving unsolicited job offers and requests to connect with recruiters.

If you haven't been active in the job market lately, know that there are lots of good employers looking for good people right now. There are surely going to be many who are trolling LinkedIn looking for Target employees who want to jump ship.

Why wait for the axe to fall at Target? Take control of your career and make yourself known to those who are hiring!!

Good luck.

I agree with this post 100% having been laid off last year after the data breach.

Exploit any outplacement services you get.

I also got a lot of leads - including the consulting assignment that just turned into a full time position - from Career Builder.

Good luck to you all!

You won't believe how other companies do value Target experience. I never felt more human and respected in the job place, than I did when I left Target.
