Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Worst news possible

How can anybody work at a corporation that announces that layoffs will be a commonplace occurance for the new few years? And it will be thousands of jobs lost. Employee morale is just going to go right down the toilet.

I live when people talk about layoff strategy. 1year ago half of .com was cut. Now . Com is the linch pin of Target strategy. So much for safety from layoffs. Target= Bestbuy. Strategy is cut and squeeze blood from the stone. You worked 40 hours before they will expect 60-80 now. They dont care if you know there is layoffs brcause they would rather you leave then pay severance. Even if they cut 5,000 people it would be hard to save 1billion over 2 years. Easier if you leave then they have to advertise.

@72914 - I agree. And that's the saddest part. The "nose despite the face" that is being cut off is the culture of Target, unfortunately. That is what is dwindling and disappearing, layoff-by-layoff, minute-by-minute. The culture is what drew me in, a culture of positivity, recognition for hard work and for being smart and execution-driven. The environment has become very sad, scary, and one of everyone out for themselves. It's a tough work environment, for sure.

72868 - I am torn by this. That was the culture under B.U. FFF and promote yourself. Worked to build the brand, but the economy tanked, sales stalled and a new (FAILED) leadership team took over. The new CEO is looking to take Target back to its roots, but by cutting all of the jobs is the same as the old adage as cut off the nose to spite the face. Will backfire big time...

72868, sorry to be skeptical, but you assume the "right" people will be cut. I think those who have invested the most in their personal brand, have been promoted more often, have higher review scores (often for "how they manage failures well"), and give higher scores to their reports who align with the same philosophies. Not sure they will be cut over people who naturally spend their energies on execution.

At the end of the day it's about time that someone stepped up and started cutting jobs from all the freeloaders at this company. People who are too busy having coffees and promoting their personal brand rather then actually accomplishing real work. I hope that this time around they cut deep enough to scare off the rest of the people who don't want to actually contribute. The FFF all day every day is finally departing which in my mind is long overdue!

Nope. This is my Second job in 15 years. And I don't work there anymore.

Maybe I am wrong about who will feel threatned. But for sure many people will quit which will achieve their objective easier

72853 - a very naive statement. I would bet $ that you are a younger employee. Having been around multiple companies over 20 years, any employee, and I mean any, is viewed as expendable at company the size of Target.

If we've learned anything, it's that anyone can be replaced.

Dear Anonymous72853, do you consider yourself to be that kind of critical employee that YOU can't be replaced?

And that's probably why they announced it. People who feel threatned are typically the ones who are not really useful(or thinks so). So they will find other jobs and move on. The ones in critical non-removable knows the company cant survive without them. So there...
