Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Hang in there

This is not new to Target…. It’s new to HQ!

Target lifer here: 30+ years, 15+ in stores the rest at Regional and HQ offices.

I've been reading these posts for quite a while and I'd just like to share a little history outside of the HQ perspective that may explain a little of some of the Store perspective re: Target and outline why some of the store based folks have been so harsh in their comments. I’m sure all are aware, but there are over 300,000 TGT people outside of HQ - The stores have always been the area where TGT cut $$$ or made changes to adjust $$$ spends in the past.

I’ve worked through four significant organization changes that all had job eliminations going back to when Fast Fun and Friendly first rolled out.

Each of these re-orgs impacted thousands of store/field based positions throughout my career. We never had a "heads up" of any of these massive changes over the years. There are literally whole “pyramids” of positions that no longer exist. These changes typically coincided with sr leadership changes at then Dayton Hudson and later Target. The last two I was directly involved in implementing, they were all for cost cutting/expense reduction. Example – Store based leadership used to be called managers, in the 90’s they were changed to Team Leaders – All store based leadership positions were affected – nearly all had to interview for the new positions. Many didn’t make it. Each store has half the exempt positions they had 15 years ago; District/Group/Regional teams are a fraction of what they once were yet the stores function rather well…..

I was once promoted to a position, relocated my family to a new state (I moved 11 times for Target) and then a week after I arrived on my first day after moving in to my new house I was told my position was eliminated and here was my travel itinerary….. I had to fly to Minneapolis to re interview for the new enhanced position where 3/4 of my peers didn't make the cut. This was in 1994…. Stores/field feel this uncertainty you are living as part of their culture.

Best to you all!

I just want to throw it out there that not all HQ team members were out to make the stores lives awful. I worked at HQ but had nothing to do with the policies that were put in place that have made your lives a living hell. In fact, I often felt awful for you that so much responsibility was heaped on you, and you didn't have the time or resources to adequately execute, and that you weren't getting paid enough to do some of the stuff that you are expected to do. I was working on other things upstream in the procurement process to ultimately save you guys from having to yank crap off the shelves and move it from the back room, and then back to the shelves.

I totally respect and validate your experience, and I'm not invalidating anything. But not all HQ team members are evil. Many of us are just busting our a$$es just like you.

See how the game is changed it doesn't get better just worse. Plus we are stepping up Boxer day in the US and expect it to be as big a Christmas so good luck.

If this is like other corporate cost cutting measures at other large local retailers. 2billion is wave 1, then it will be a wave every year for the next 4 unless rev increases drastically

Goodness me I'm so concerned about all the HQ talent leaving because of the layoffs. I hope against hope one of them is the idiot who sent us 10 times more easter product than my store could have ever sold.

A team member I know at the store I shop was asking and I explained that HQ was experiencing cuts to make us leaner like the stores.

I respect the gleam in his eye that said "about damn time".

The folks whining and kvetching the most are the ones who should be worried. The rest of us would like you to shut up so we can do our freaking job.

There is a measure of uncertainty as to how decisions are getting made on who to cut. If, though, you're kick butt and have in demand skills you will get another job.

It is hard for store or DC employees to feel any sympathy for people at HQ when many of them made decisions that have made life hard on us.when dcs want to cut they just ride people and nit pic.we are all tired of it and this has went on for years while HQ was bloated.my DC will get the worst opinion survey ever for the best company ever.....yeah right.

I hear you and I empathize that Target has balanced costs at a store level in the past. I would summarize that many people I am assuming also yourself joined Target HQ for it's stability. Those people are now comming to grips with the fact that stability is gone and are deciding if they will stay through the next waves of cuts. I agree it is the same decision store based employees make if they will take the risk and stay. It is a personal decision, people have families to support. The problem for Target is this will result in loss of talent as it has in the past and a change in culture, maybee less so for the stores.
