Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

From someone who was laid off in PD&D in March - Free advice to the leaders about how not to treat people the day they are laid off

Do not gather all the remaining team members to line the hallways and clap and cheer as the laid off leave their final "you were laid off - here's your walking papers- you must leave the building immediately" meeting.

It may make leadership feel better to plan such an event, but it was humiliating to experience. I am sure others liked it, just my point of view.

It's not a time a person wants to be a part of a contrived celebratory event. Granted, it was nice to get a chance to say some goodbyes at that time, but very awkward with the huge audience watching and clapping through my extreme distress. A few hours earlier I had a job I loved and now everyone is clapping as I leave for the very last time? I'll never get that unsettling combo of feelings out of my head. Life goes on , things are looking up, but this is my small way to possibly help the next round leave with more dignity.

Do you really expect any better though? What got Target to this point is bad decision making from leaders. That is Target's hallmark...

If that really happened, tell City Pages, or some press outlet. It doesn't matter if it was well meaning, that is highly unprofessional conduct and just...it's a really f---ed up piece of zeitgeist and trust me, the public should know about it. Even if it's just a vignette, it's potent material. Stuff like this will happen, but people should know what they're doing, and stupidity like this shouldn't go unnoted.

I was in that laid off group, too. I think everyone meant really well. Not sure who planned it, so I wouldn't use any names, and I am sure they had the best of intentions, but you are right- It was a terrible and very awkward day for everyone.

As a former Team Member who was laid-off last year (and who has experience at several large companies), I have to say that this may be the most disgusting thing I've heard about emanating from the recent layoffs. If (when) you are asked to leave a company due to RIF, you want to at least leave with your dignity intact. To be cheered on as they walk out with their box of belongings is exactly the opposite of what the laid-off person wants. To add insult to injury, the laid-off person cannot say anything back, lest they jeopardize any of the severance agreement. On the other side of the aisle, I'm sure the people who were told to "cheer on" the departing members were also extremely uncomfortable. Three words should apply above all in these situations: Dignity, Decorum, and Respect. (Imaging cheering a casket as it is rolled past in procession: "Way to go, buddy! Afterlife for you, woot woot!") If you are reading this and were affected by the RIF, take heart and know that no other company would handle this situation so indelicately. Hopefully the remaining leadership at Target will learn to handle these matters in a more mature way in the future. Take care!

That is awful, I am so sorry. Totally humiliating. I was laid off in March and that story makes me feel sick - that would be the last thing I want. Thanks for posting - this surely will be seen and other team members spared this experience.

Wow that is disgusting, I am truly sorry that is your last memory of Target.

My team walked down to the final HR meeting with the person on our team who was let go so he didn't have to walk there alone. It was anything but happy, everyone had tears as we hugged that person and wished them the best.

I totally agree, Anonymous 88233- the people who came to my cube while packing up and made it personal were great. I have a lot of good memories of those conversations. I got a laugh out of "Fast Fun and Fired group sendoff" . So well-put, that's exactly what management tried to make it. Thanks for the laugh!

That is horrifying. I am sorry you had to experience that. Wildly inappropriate on Target's part.

That's terrible. I, too, was let go in the March round. It was a balance of wanting to say goodbye, but at a point, you feel like the floor freak show. I think the best thing to do is go to their desk and say goodbye. Make it personal. I'll never forget the coworkers who I worked with for YEARS who didn't stop by and the coworkers I didn't know well who did. It may be uncomfortable for those not laid off, but a nice personal goodbye is good closure for those leaving - a big Fast Fun and Fired group sendoff - gross.
