Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Why I Didn't Get Cut at Target

I didn't figure out how to play the game in the right way. In a place where Team Leads are recognized for moving team members OFF their teams as quickly as possible because it was seen as "development" (WHAT?), I was in a department where those of us with higher educations were all held back. Only those without degrees or working on their degrees - and under 35 years old - were promoted or given full time positions in other areas. "So-and-So has accepted a position as a Project Get To Knower Business Associate Downtown" was a common occurrence. I can count into the double-digits those in my area who were Senior Reps, but hit the glass ceiling and funny - all had B.A.s or B.S. degrees. Those moving up were all undegreed and younger. Huh?

I, myself, have a Master's in Business and I couldn't break the glass ceiling of the area I was in. I tried for 8 years and was so sick of the "I'll get you to where you want to be! What areas are you interested in?" chirpy hogwash from every Team Lead I was assigned (a new one every 6 months, by the way). I had stellar reviews since I'd started...but apparently wasn't Fast, Fun or Friendly enough. I realized too late that I should've gone to more Happy Hours than go home to my family.

But...I'm very grateful now that I kept going home to my family. I still have a job and many of those who moved up were dumped.

And let's not start with the folks stuck at the stores. To break the stores' glass ceiling and get into corporate? Fuggetaboutit. I know of one person who did it legitimately (after 7 years in the store) and one who did it through the back door. Just doesn't happen.

Yuck.

I was so glad my husband left the company. He was spending way too much time with his Target peers because it was required of his GM. My husband didn't work more than 50 hours as a SGL but he was gone around 65 or more hours because of the team buildings, drink nights and other work activities families were excluded from. I got tired of every Friday night being alone and put my foot down. Told him no job is so important you spend 15 or more hours of mandatory socialization. If he had to tell them I was a giant pain who wouldn't allow him to go so be it but I wanted my husband back. He was on the phone constantly with work so I didn't feel it was too much to ask for him to not have so many work related activities off the clock. He agreed with me and I knew he hated going but he knew the game with Target it wasn't about the work only about the image and being brand. He also cut out his daily lunches with coworkers and that pissed of a blond company whore he worked with. He started having lunch with the kids which was nice for them. He felt the backlash of saying no to after hours activities and realized just how awful Target was to people who put family over Target. He found a better job and finally has work life balance. His new job isn't perfect but when the work day is over it is over no required off hours work events and no one getting mad about him choosing to see his kids at lunch rather than with coworkers.

Why have you just accepted not getting promoted there are other companies out there besides Target. Apply and look for new jobs you should be doing that every 6 months. If there arent opportunities where you are seek out and find them.

I had to drink an espresso shot and chow down on couple kit-kats before a social event. It's hard keeping up with natural extroverts. I thought about powder but never got the courage to try it.

Go to TTS. Been in TTS for 5 years, I've only been to 1/2 dozen FFF events. I guess we don't do FUN.

I always thought it would be a lot more "fun" to be go home and have dinner on time than have to stay late to make up time lost to FFF events. I didn't think that was much fun at all.

A lot of women didn't buy the FFF, either, llike me (the original poster). I wanted to work, not go outside and play horseshoes as a "team building" activity. I wasn't a crabass about it, I had fun (hey, it was summer and they were paying me), but I didn't respect it much.

I still want to work while I'm there. And, all things considered, I like what I do and would like to keep my job.

I hate to say that this is a good thing in any way, but it will be interesting to see how things change over the next few years culture-wise i.e. if those with more education and experience are rewarded instead of those who are "friends" with their ETL. (Life Hack: If they won't help you hide a body, they aren't really your friend. In fact, if they don't even say "I'm sorry for your loss" when you have a close death in your family? Start wondering if they are worth your time, ETL or not.)

In some areas of Target it was the men (Accounts Payable) that were in the extreme minority and were discriminated against. Many men could not get into the FF&F silliness and so were disadvantaged to be promoted or even keep their jobs. And the Happy Hours? How is Target family friendly when team members are expected to go out drinking after work rather than go home to their families? What hypocrites.
