Why do you people dislike WFH so much?

Genuinely curious.

Oh yeah, the whole “if your job can be done from home it can be done from Bangalore” BS has been refuted from here to Mars and back a thousand times, so that answer doesn’t count. I’m looking for substance here.

@dj - This guy gets it. Nothing better than having your personal laptop open next to the work one, and taking yourself off video so you can watch a g4ngb4ng.

Counterpoint - going to campus repopulates the sp4nkb4nk for a j3rk sesh when you do a WFH.

Hybrid is the way to go - get the best of both g1rls...er....worlds!

I really miss WFH; because when I'm in the office, I can't yank it like a monkey on a mango tree. Also, my boss and HR tends to frown upon my extracurricular activity.

It's simple. With Home VPN connectivity, it is much more difficult to track what you are doing on your laptop. It is much easier to monitor from the office where the company can also install video monitoring of your workstation.

The carbon footprint from all the gas burnt on daily commutes/office facility maintenance, and the time lost to crazy traffic. I believe WFH will become standard for most companies within 5 years. Anyone who thinks otherwise is becoming obsolete (stone age). Current technology enables WFH so why not?

There’s no one size fits all anymore in this day and age. I prefer to go to the office any day but am grateful for flex your day and wfh when I need to wait for the cute plumber to visit. My biggest pet peeve is people sending me invites for an hour catch up on Campus. I don’t do coffee or lunches at work - I’m there to increase shareholder value and then food/social life is outside of work. Clear boundaries help me prioritize. Happy New Year

ExxonMobil negotiated favorable county tax rates based on campus population. When too many employees stop coming to campus, the company risks losing this leverage, facing higher taxes, and therefore reducing shareholder profits.

Yeah. When I’m at campus, I get absolutely nothing done. Randoms constantly interrupt me with nonsense not related to my role. When I WFH, I get sooooo much more done. I wish I could say to people “ just because a thought pops into your head, it doesn’t mean you have to impose on someone else with it. Some of us are trying to get work done!!”

I don't like the unfriendly, backstabbing people at my site. I am not able to WFH but I am able to WA (work alone). I like to work away from the a--holes and not attend any useless meetings. The meetings are all BS and a-s kissing sessions. The people are the worst. I hide away for most of the day. If I could build and test my work at home I would. I used to be able to travel to other companies and trouble shoot problems but now I am under excon's thumb. I am getting good at tunning out the a holes at work. One guy found an old conex box to set up his office from. He hides out there most of the day. Find a place to make it through the day, week, year. I am being watched constantly and it su-ks. I do not do well with micromanagement. I am not a bad worker or lazy I just don't like being watched and fu---d with.

WFH shows that large numbers of middle management are not needed. Thus, the middle managers push against WFH in an act of self preservation.

@ccs Yeah, nobody collaborates guy. They just gossip. I get less done at the office because I always have some old guy interrupting my work flow to tell me some d-mb story or whine about management.

@wka It doesn’t count because companies have been sending jobs everywhere but America since the 1990s, long before WFH as you’ve all come to despise it became a thing.

The company got so much more out of me when I WFH. My role was supporting people around the globe, so I was on calls all day, anyway. Worst was when I’d get into office early - be on calls all say until dark - come home and get on MORE calls. Why not just save myself the 2+ hours of preparation & commuting??

Yes, I had kids that I’d get off to school - but, I’d settle into my home office and work hard for the day. Often, late into the evening, after kids went to bed. No time wasted getting “office attired” ready. No time spent in traffic - both ways. No time looking for a parking spot and huffing across campus. No idle chitchat around water cooler. No having to leave desk to 1) buy lunch or 2) eat somewhere else.

And yes, maybe I did a load of laundry every once in a while - but the value of my time devoted to actual work was 100% better at home.

  1. I’ve noticed generally slower response times from people working from home.
  1. I don’t like being on zoom calls for a large portion of the day.
  1. Much easier for me to stand up and talk to coworkers about a topic and bring in additional teammates/managers into the conversation for further discussion if we are sitting next to each other. They can come to my desk, I can go to their desk to view each other’s monitors if need be.
  1. Handover always seems less effective when not sitting with someone.

These all generally relate to ease of communication and collaboration and are just my preferences. Probably depends on your role and how much you work with your team.

Very easy. Many (not all) people who want to work from hime just want to work less hard.... Doing laundry, shopping, watching po-n... is not working.
