Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

There us hope away from Centene

October 2023 lay off here.

I was at Centene a short time, but it was by far the worst experience of my career. I've never had to file a formal complaint against a manager, but I had to there.

I was unemployed for 8 months and no one would touch me. Mind you, I have a glowing resume with over 20 years of experience.

I tried a different industry altogether just to get a job, and guess what? I'm thriving again. Promoted within 4 months, which btw is my norm---to be promoted up quickly. Thriving before Centene and now after. So, it's safe to say that it wasn't me.

If you're there and are facing struggle...just try to leave altogether.

I don't know about anyone else but promoting too soon is not a good idea. My PL are constantly asking me for help or can't help me because they do not know how to do the job that I do. I was offered a promotion 2 years ago and turned it down. I was barely trained as an adjuster and hadn't even been trained to price yet. I said no because how am I supposed to help my team if I can't even perform the required job functions that they are performing? All they want is a warm body to fill the seat qualified or not and that leads to butt loads of errors and issues - which btw is somehow always the analysts' fault and not leaderships' - - - - surprise surprise! No, thank you.

Don't make excuses for the bad leaders. There are way too many, they bring more bad leaders just like them and get rud of ones who challenge things not being right. I have seen this multiple times in action.

Do not let them (the bad management) overshadow the good ones. Those good leaders have no idea how truly appreciated they are and how much they have helped us in non leadership roles grow and feel valued. We protect them as much as they protect us.

And as for promotions. I have had the personal experience (more than once) of dealing with folks who have been promoted too soon. They sure do sell themselves on the interview using fancy wording but when it comes down to the work and doing the job they shove it to others. They’re constantly asking for help because they asked for a role they’re not ready for all in the name of a promotion. But boy do they sell it like they’re Gods gift to the company on their LinkedIn but the reality is they’re struggling and shoving the work on folks below them because they’d rather get that title in a short amount of time than EARN it.

Ahem. Leaders reading this - please consider this when promoting. It’s what they can do… not what they SAY they can do.

There are more than a few bad leaders at Centene! Numbers are too high!

What dept were you in? And I’m sorry you had the experience of a bad manager but I’m glad you found a career you can thrive at. There are many great leaders at Centene but there are a few bad apples in the mix and some of those bad apples are downright nasty. Trust me I know. I had the misfortune of working under one.

However, I will disagree with you on the subject of promotion. Speedy promotion mentality can be toxic. Don’t think because you aren’t promoting and getting some upgraded title every couple of months that you’re failing. Four months is way too soon to promote, no matter where you are. If you’re excelling in these new roles and responsibilities with these promotions then more power to you. If not, these promotions and new job titles are going to bite you in the a-s eventually. I fully understand why Centene doesn’t promote every 4 months. There is so much to learn and it simply cannot be done in 4 months for any department. But I understand that for some people, fast frequent promotions are of significant importance. So perhaps it was best you left all together. (No snark, I only wish people the best. Everyone deserves to be happy).
