Reorg position offers with a commitment to relocate clause?

Has anyone heard of groups that have gone through their reorg and part of the offer letter includes a commitment to relocate (CA to TX or India)? Was the timeline provided of when relocation must be done? I'm just not sure what the strategy is here. Is it to reinforce if you don't want to relocate that you should take EOI (if offered) and that if your position is relocated and you choose not to move, ie you quit, you will NOT get severance? Each person's circumstances are likely different and each would need to weigh their options of EOI (if offered), accepting a position if selected, which includes either relocating when scheduled or continuing to work and contribute to 401K and pension until forced to relocate and then "quit", and than also the trade-off of employment elsewhere. Thoughts?

I wonder if instead of EOIs They will offer jobs with relocation requirement when they know you don’t want to move.

Heaps of Californians have taken Houston jobs without selling their California home and/or moving their family. I have seen it done many different ways. Some people fly back and forth (on Southwest) every other weekend and have just a cheap studio apartment in Houston. One guy I know doesn't even have a CAR in Houston as he takes the bus to work from his apt. One lady used Chevron package to sell one Calif home near the office and buy another she could easily rent at a high rate (nearer the City) then bought in Houston and stayed a few years. I knew a guy who bought an entire year worth of round trip tickets at a good discount. There are ways around it.

The action they take is to fire you. If you agree to move but don’t show up in the new office, they will say you are not in compliance with the in-office mandate and show you the door. Also, if you take the money for relocation and later quit, you need to pay it back as part of the repayment agreement they make you sign. The only legit loophole that some people get away with is to temporarily move just themselves but keep their family in the original location. It would be on you to get yourself back and forth between each spot and to pay for your own lodging but some people have done it. For example, fly into Houston Tuesday morning and fly home to California Thursday night and be in the Houston office Tuesday, Wed, Thurs every week.

Ask our colleagues in Corporate Aviation Services about their timeline and what they were offered for individual relocation packages / retention bonuses. The aircraft have already moved…

The action they can take is to thank you for your service and show you the door. I went through this in 2015 with all of my team being moved to Houston. People tried to hang on in CA as long as they could but all were eventually given ultimatums. Most of us left quickly others in 6 months and last man in 12.

Usually a position offer stipulates the location of the job and a start date. If the location is not where you are currently located, then they include a relocation package and relocation benefits must be used within a year of your start date. If you don’t accept, then you are quitting and there is no severance package. If you do accept but don’t actually relocate, it will eventually catch up with you and your new boss will expect you to be compliant with in-office mandates. Bottom line if you are offered a job that requires relocation and you turn it down, you are quitting so it’s best to request EOI if you have no intention of relocating and if there is no hope of a local position where you are currently located.

There is no strategy yet. Birdies are telling me they are still very much trying to figure this out. It was definitely a shoot first, questions later situation. When Mikey found out he was on the hot seat, panic ensued.

Stop fantasizing, just wait for the information to come out.
Nobody is relocating to India, the whole purpose is to have low cost workers there, not expats.
