Syncrude R&D Center being shut down

In Rich Kruger’s latest great investment in Suncor… shutting down the Syncrude R&D center in Edmonton.

Because he cares so much about Suncor, he cares so much about Alberta and the future of the oil sands and the advancement of our technology. To improve on it’s efficiency. It’s awful, this is what happens when an outsider CEO comes in from activist investors. It’s a shame this happened…

Very very very sad , not good for the future of Alberta at all … it just goes to show how horrible, and how dark, how heartless Freddy is.

To the reporter- could be the decision to sell the building would have had to have been communicated to the environmental organization running that business area because it’s got an administration assigned to it. There’s some regulation there you could try, but there wouldn’t be an announcement and you’re not going to get them to comment.

Maybe focus on a comparison to the Fort McMurray residents average earnings since the layoffs began, foreclosures, get some comments from MPs, impact to businesses… because there’s a story there likely. Sure feels that way living here

To the reporter: A friend works at Syncrude R&D. They are told that they need to relocate to Calgary. Many are moving to other departments but there are still some folks doing the same job as before. Initially it was either relocate or leave. Later they said by "leave" we mean there is a severance package. They were given a short time to think about it too. For some the move is happening this summer for others later. But eventually Edmonotn R&D will be closed.
From top top management perspective, Syncrude was the only mine with its own R&D. so regardless of their performance, they shut it or merged it into other groups.

Hello - I'm a reporter trying to confirm the closure of Syncrude's R&D centre in Edmonton as was posted here but I haven't received any response to my emailed questions from Suncor's media relations department. I tried calling the phone number listed for the R&D Centre on Google maps but the phone was disconnected. I'm looking for a more concrete confirmation. I respect the importance of anonymity on this site so if anyone has a link to an announcement or any tips/suggestions on verifying the closure they feel comfortable posting in reply to this, I'd appreciate it. We would like to run a story about it in our publication TheEnergyMix.com. Thank you.

It’s nuts that the value of R&D in Edmonton, in terms of long term employees… at the top of their field… and in terms of growing with the industry have not have been recognized as a priceless resource. Them moving, leaving their homes/city place of business seems like a stretch, but hoping they consider it because the industry would benefit! Thank you! Also thank you from all of us that had the benefit of working with you over the years.

Mining + upgrading is mature technology. Insitu is much more cost competitive and less land disturbance.

Hard to see any greenfield mines being built. Likely mine extensions and new insitu facilities. I’m sure that factored into closure decision for Syncrude R&D.
