Every time we go through a re-org recently we appear to try out the enlightenment from a management guru du jour, presumably after “someone” attends a motivation seminar or something. I think that Chevron had a reasonable management focus when I joined 25 years ago, focus on maintaining business unit momentum and communities of practice. In the last decade however we seem increasingly lost, culminating in the ridiculous micromanagement by id--ts that is agile. I am putting in my EOI this upcoming round, but hope that management finds a more reasonable management guru this round. Instead of Microsoft, maybe we should look at Steve Job circa 1980 at Apple, when he came back and pulled to company from near bankruptcy to a global leader. We can start by recognizing managers don’t find and develop oil reserves. These two clips should be required viewing by all Sr. Managers.
