Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

For those who left...

For those who left for greener pastures in the last 2-3 years, how's it going? Did you take a paycut to leave? Or get a pay increase in the new company? Do other companies do similar ranking systems?

Best career decision I've ever made was to leave. Should have done it sooner.

The basics:

  • Cut to base pay but taking home 25% more with bonuses
  • LTIP bonus
  • Better benefits across the board
  • More time off
  • Fun culture (imagine that?)
  • WFH options twice a week
  • Less stress
  • Competent management that actually understand the business
  • Zero backstabbing

I feel like a person again and valued in the work I do - you can't put a price on that!

My advice: pull your pension and run! It's a downhill ride at Exxon/Imperial!

Evaluation is much more fair and no bs ranking. At least management won’t push you to send work to a cheap location like BTC and to review and approve their garbage deliverables. You also don’t have to deal with clown robot type Manager like Imperial.

Left in 2022 to get the role that I knew I was never going to get at IOL. Took a healthy pay cut on base but more than made up with bonuses. Learned a lot and don't regret my time there, but I could see my career starting to flounder so I'm very glad that I made the move.

I left IOL in late 2021 and have switched companies once after leaving. Both companies offered similar pay, but all have amazing bonus structures in place. My current place even has DB. No company is perfect, but never as bad as IOL. Right before I quit IOL, I wasn't eating or sleeping. Stressing over how to play the game and wondering if I took on enough side initiatives to get an okay ranking. This isn't the case in other companies. You still have performance reviews, but they're only tied to your bonus partially. And they're much more relaxed. All in all, I think the grass is greener on the other side. I'm at a really happy place now, but IOL has shaped a big part of my career and I've made amazing friends there. This is why I keep coming back to this forum after all these years.
