Has anyone honestly thought about asking for legal help with compensation issues? I feel like I can't trust the deal they're going to propose.

Actually it does make a difference to have an attorney rep you. I know first hand, it makes a difference. just look for small firms who handled marriott cases before.
F**k lawyers. Dealing with them is a waste of your time and money.
Severance really isn't negotiable...it's a gift.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Don't cling, don't cry, don't mope, don't sigh.
Don't look back, just be grateful that they're giving you any $ at all while giving you the boot. They don't have to give you anything, but they are anyway.
Consider yourself fortunate, in that regard.
Look forward and forge ahead.
Go on, take the money and run...ah ooo~yeah.

Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done (at will employment), they really don't need to offer any severance by law and it's typically offered as a gesture of goodwill. Are they offering the usual 1 week for every year of employment that they have in the past layoffs?
