Why were employees with a strong performance record and outstanding work ethic laid off? A few folks I know who've been here for a long time who were among the most knowledgeable and hardest working people are now gone. Why would you want to get rid of them?

And the worst is they don’t tell you who left so you have to find out the hard way when you were awaiting critical info from that person and now you need more time to finish your job but it’s due yesterday. Quality is just going to su-k more and people will get tired of buying cr-p. Time to sell my stock before it goes any lower - should of sold at 220!!!
Yep, party is over at AMD. There was a small moment there and a chance to get ahead, but now it’s done. Losing sight of the bread and butter, not a good idea.
Bonuses suffered because PC and Gaming experienced downturns while Datacenter kept everyone's lights on and accepted said smaller bonuses--all this while Lisa said AMD is a "Datacenter first" company and there are reports of PC and Gaming customers feeling abandoned by AMD.
Next, we started seeing how Instinct and other GPUs run so much better on AMD EPYC processors because of higher/faster bandwidth, etc.
So hey, let's punish the people who've been 1) keeping the ship afloat while 2) helping build a second ship. Makes eminent sense. Especially because there's no way in he-l the AI side will need the exact same skills they just got done laying off. Oh... wait...
What also confusing is why are we laying off datacenter CPU people while the buisness is doing great? I get the embedded and client are struggling right now because of the macro but other areas are healthy and getting punished for seemingly no reason
Layoffs of this size are usually demoralising and a sign the penny pinchers are now in charge. You risk critical info being permanently lost over the long term for a short term shock that affects any remaining motivated employees.
It doesn't get better when these things start. All the other things happen, loss of free coffee, more RTO, cheaper hires that need spoon feeding, performance metrics which are impossible for anyone to please without brown nosing.
Well, at least they didn't lay off any of the tech writers who would document processes and results.

First we hire all j o e b l o w s from everywhere (only qualification needed was to be able to spell AMD) as directors, managers and senior engineers and then get rid of all the real talents that had been with the company with thick and thin - makes so much sense!!!
To address the first comment, the point you made is very important, layoffs are very dangerous, and one of those reasons is loss of institutional knowledge, or severe delay in restoring it at least from remaining staff involved in other endeavors.
To the original poster, this is purely a business move, and I guarantee you that these layoffs will only hurt AMD's competitiveness, just for some short-term financial gain. It takes a long time to find good people and vett them, etc. They should have done the old school IBM way and re-utilized people who would have been laid off and focused them in the AI segment instead. These layoffs since last year are majorly short sighted, at a time when AMD has advantage over intel and is trying to catch up to Nvidia.
So what do they decide to do? Shoot themselves in the foot, apparently. Too bad, there was some serious potential here for something good. I highly suspect quality will suffer from here on out; the party is over.
As a shareholder, this makes me wonder if holding stock longterm in AMD is a good idea...
