Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why the sudden bare minimum?

I’ve noticed that a lot more people who used to go all out at work now just do the bare minimum. It’s becoming a common thing around here. I'm curious, what was the moment that made you decide to dial it back and stop giving it your all? I'm yet to reach that point, but who knows, maybe I will.

It does seem hypocritical for EM to dictate that someone’s work cannot be performed from home then PIP that person to give the same work to someone in India.

The mandated bottom rank class percentages along with mandatory PIP. The hypocrisy of not allowing remote work while off shoring the same work half a world away. The absolute impotence of local managers to correct these issues. The propaganda "we are xom" surveys used to beat us down until morale improves.

I'm ranked above avg and probably will continue. But I am morally outraged to see good solid employees getting this treatment. I won't leave for various personal reasons. So instead I do something by doing nothing.

When I realized the company does not care about quality.

They outsourced my work to someone that had no chance of doing it.

I can only care as much as they do. So, not much.

It's called quiet quitting. Going above and beyond doesn't get you anywhere anymore. They promote with nepotism or if you're more useless than they are.

@1pzt I did the same the last 2 years before I retired. But what amazed me is how people seem to be caught up in the system and seem to think they have no control over their careers. A lot of people will put up with significant cr-p just because they can’t embrace change… career with another company.

I’m definitely feeling this myself, not exactly sure why. Certainly a part of it is that I get more time with our Sr Leaders, I realize that they aren’t very good. They work REALLY heard and are motivated, but they don’t necessarily have good judgement and are basically just trying to cover themselves from judgement from above rather than trying to make actual good decisions.

18 years of going above and beyond, working nights and weekend unpaid OT, moving to whatever god-forsaken place EM asked me to, Q1/outstanding annually… always being promised that big promotion that never came. I was “on the bench” and the “next role” was going to be the big leadership role I’d be waiting for - for 5 rotations in a row with no real explanation as to why I had to wait yet again. Last 3 years @ outstanding with only 1% raises told I’m at the top of salary reference.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was back-back deaths of an FLS and BTL my age with kids like mine. I suddenly woke up and said I’m not giving up any more free time with my kids for a promotion that never seems to come.

Now that I’ve settled to doing individual contributor work I’m the happiest I’ve been in years.

One great example.....remember that email telling us how great of a quarter we have, but immediately followed by challenging times ahead...........

Along the same lines as @1qmw's comment...
Imagine basically being told you are trash that will be put out to the proverbial curb once the site closes/you get laid off.
No offer to relocate (even w/o support), no chance to even do a temporary assignment to help with startup. Nothing.

Welcome to the technician world. It amazes me that work still gets done...though I guess it says something about the quality of the people corporate EM doesn't deem worthy to even offer jobs in Texas.

I quit caring when I asked my Department Manager said “You were the top performer but I cannot rank you any higher than middle 1/3 due to the number of HiPos in the group. You will get the same middle 1/3 ranking next year for the same political reasons, even if you are the top performer again”.

The day i stopped caring was the day i knew it was rigged. No mater what I did it would not be appreciated. Others that did nothing were applauded and praised. I still tried until this year. I am now NRE and am heading for PCP. If i am placed on pip I will not even participate. I will be a pain the a-s for them for three years. I will demotivate the fellow employees and speak the truth. I will tarnish this company. Remember supervisors and managers to treat your employees with respect. Either they will get some work out of me or nothing. You will know who I am.

When I finally accepted the Darren Woods doesn't give a fu-k about the employees including HiPos like me. At that point I just gave up. Now I do the bare bare minimum, keep collecting a paycheck and cashing in as many RSU as I am allowed. That's it. And I'm also looking for another job in any other industry.

Worked my tail off last many years including long hours in office during covid. Great PA feedback all these years but when it comes to raises its always less than 5%, and some weasely reason for denying promotion.

On the other hand my spouses career in non oil and gas is flourishing with half as much stress. Plus i was missing out on my kids activities all the time due to made up work emergencies, early and late calls.

That was my break point. i still come in do my work as best as i can, but i give back to the company what it gives me which off late has not been much.

Hi-Po here…. Even “us hi-pos” haven’t gotten much the last 3 years. Outstanding and “O with distinction” and have gotten maybe 5% total comp increase over that time. But hey, thanks for the extra 10 shares of stock for the “distinction”.

being outstanding for the last 3years while getting a 0% raise each year over the same time will get you to doing the minimum (or less)

When I realized that the ONLY people that Exxon counts as employees are HiPos. The rest of us are just floating through until we are NSI'd out. There is no functional S&D system, there is no fairness in performance assessments; it's all just smoke and mirrors to get us to hang around.

That, and then when the company doubled down on getting rid of all of the Western employees, but lied (or is lying still?) to our faces about it.

Nice try Durwood. This site isn't meant to supplement the WAEM surveys.
