Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

The slackers

I’m shocked by how many unproductive people are in my small organization. Some lack the necessary skills but continue to collect a paycheck simply because the company is too lenient.

I’m skeptical about layoffs and whether the system can effectively identify these slackers, but I truly hope they’re weeded out.

These individuals are consistently unreachable on Mondays and Fridays, which likely contributes to management’s push for a return to office.

They’re like a toxic presence that undermines the efforts of all the dedicated employees.

That’s the thing. Management is correct in that we need to cut dead weight. But Management is unable to identify who is the dead weight so they just make cuts and hope things get better. Performance management at this company is horrible

Having worked at Chevron many years, I can attest that the vast majority of folks work less that a 40-hour week. Everyone knows this, but no one talks opening about it. It's cosa nostra. The whole concept of "work" is changing. So maybe in the next 20 years, AI will truly put an end to jobs that are nothing burgers.

been going on even since I started as experienced hire… even one younger new experienced hires commented “it it like this here?”… he was about to leave Chevron until he went to a super productive team getting sh*t done…. many dont get fired who knows the system well enough to not be part of layoff… the new CIO is not an id--t… after listening to him, obvious lu he quickly saw the problem just like many experienced hires

I use to be hard working, annoyed at those around me who were older and slacking off. But over time the beauracracy, illogical decisions and incompetent leadership with no real desire to improve things wore me down. Add that with a dead end on career progression and constant layoffs, I became a slacker serving my time and doing the bare minimum till my time is up. The sad thing is, there's still those who underperform me when I'm putting in such low effort.

This is a publicly listed company looking after the best interests of the major shareholders, BoD and Exec LT financially. You should do the same and look after your own best interests financially.

The reality is that you're going to have high, medium, and low performers in any organization. And the reality is that being liked is a large part of the job regardless of performance. Just keep your head down and do your own work and your life will be a whole heck of a lot happier/easier.

There are no excuses. Before engine we had the same issue with these folks. They sit in their chairs and look at their phones. Yet they get recognized for tiny efforts on high visibility projects so it continues. Many of them could care less about company success. Talent utilization management is only possible if talent managers are actively tracking work. Tracking such work is difficult for more than ~8 direct reports. Managers also need good skills to do this without making a toxic micromanaged environment. I do not know if layoffs will get right people, but God I hope so. I like them but they just are not motivated to work any more and it frustrates me how little they do.

One's personality, work style, etc. influence WFH vs 'WFH', productivity, etc. Either way, IT already has the tools that track our keystrokes, application use, etc. Like WFH or not, it does seem to be here to stay based upon job postings in other companies and industries. Heck - there are even websites that are exclusively dedicated to remote work employment!

I personally find it a bit challenging overall to remain motivated with all of the dishonesty, self-preservation, and deviant company behavior and lack of transparency. Downright disappointing. In fact, mentioned some very specific examples on the CES!

As someone who transitioned to Oil & Gas recently, I was surprised with how slowly some people work and how certain people are unreachable or joke about working on their WFH days.

ENGINE has come about because there are too many expensive people producing too little. I'm hoping that some of the overhead functions (containing people who don't know what an operating site even looks like in person) get reduced significantly.

We are here to produce oil and gas - not finger paintings from cultural diversity seminars.

little hard to not slack off when you know you're getting laid off soon, morale is pretty low from what I've experienced

Well don't come to Perth, we have someone running his business and that's his priority.
