Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Is a long-term career at 3M realistic anymore?

Is there anyone out there who still thinks a long-term career at 3M is even possible? From what I see, most people - new and old - are just clocking in until they find something better. It feels like everyone is finally realizing that 3M is going downhill fast. It’s probably for the best. No one should be pinning their hopes on this place or its leadership anymore.

you can have a very successful career at 3M if your best friend is a high level leader. Even better if you become BFF with the vice president or president of your division. For example: the director who was promoted to SVP reporting to his best friend the company CTO. Nepotism is pervasive in this company.

Having a long-term career now at 3M is not likely for many reasons. Families and aspirations are different than 30, 40 years ago and clearly 3M is no longer the company it once was. Those (myself included) who experienced 3M's greatest can attest that the core of 3M is gone; been eroded over decades by senior management. There is no going back to that magic and the excitement of having a new career and the promise of a future. I would say for the generations today, know what is, is. And take every opportunity within the company to learn as much as you can - don't deny yourself or waste you time by quiet quitting, etc., you only hurt yourself. Take advantage of all education, experience while doing your job and when the time is right, you will find a better suited opportunity. Focus on what you want, don't waste your time on trying to change or worry about things w/in the company you cannot control. Good luck.

First, let's not talk about whether 3M will be around that long. If you're in a management position, your career may advance a little faster. If you're a technical employee working at the bottom of the ladder, then you're going to be sacrificed any day now because of your incompetent boss.

3M hasn't been viable for a long-term career since the 80s, maybe 90s.

All people who are eligible to retire the company wants them to hit the button. The heat is going to get turned up until it becomes the only choice. That’s the first wave of RTW mandatory 16+ stage. How long in MN are people 50 miles from headquarters going to be okay driving in the snow and ice back and forth three days and potentially 5 days a week before they will say - not worth it. That’s the plan. No severance not pay out no bridge. Big savings.

Nope. read post @OP+1vaJNZbn - says all you need to know about who’s the kind of leader leaving and who’s staying.

I have 27 years with 3M and waiting to retire or get a severance. Frankly speaking the long term hiring doesn't exist for new 3M anymore. My advise to the younger audience - look elsewhere. Don't waste your talent here.

My experience is a straight no. In a technical role, only lip service paid to any kind of progression and career development. Although my hand was forced (asking for two years to negotiate a change in my circumstances), the best thing I did was move on....

For a long-term career at 3M to even be possible, 3M would have to be around for the long term.

If your grandma was on her deathbed, intubated and getting palliative care, would you buy her a nice dress that’ll cover her feeding tube? New shoes? Some lipstick? A gift certificate to her favorite restaurant? Of course not. It’s simply a bad investment. Time is better spent getting her affairs in order and sorting out who gets what when she’s gone. Her house, car, corneas, and so forth. You might even consider grabbing a pillow to accelerate the process.

3M management views its employees in exactly the same way.

There’s been no investment in employees for more than a decade. 3M values skills that come from outsiders as new hires, who slowly become unmarketable themselves after a couple of years at 3M. 3M is a place where aspirations are quickly overrun by empty promises from managers at all levels such as “hang in there”, “it’s just not the right time”, “let’s add it to you goals for next year”, and the list goes on. Sad to see this impact so many good and loyal employees waiting for things to improve, but it never does. The only training you’ll receive at 3M is endless compliance training aimed at society’s most clueless.

What Vanguard Group wants, Vanguard Group gets. And remember MR is still here, making decisions for RemainCo. Watch for more spin-offs followed by more lay offs. Welcome to the New 3M.

3M is trying to reduce headcount again, but after the bad publicity from the last round of layoffs and the cost of the severance payouts, they're trying to make employees leave "voluntarily."

So they cut benefits: roll back WYW and cut LTIP for mid-level managers. And they withhold promotions and hire externally, to the detriment of existing employees.

If they can't get enough of us to leave, look for more draconian policies to increase unhappiness and turnover until targets are reached.

Then, look for blame, as leadership points the finger at existing employees who are stretched so thin they can't possibly wear all the hats bring piled on them.

Given all hiring for higher level roles is now external, if you want to grow in your career, you are going to need to grow outside of 3M. That is, unless you were one of those who came in at a high level to begin with. The knowledge of those who have vast experience within 3M is no longer a valuable asset. The RTO also targets the individuals who have been at 3M longer, given the newer hires are from other areas and not mandated back.
