Can supervisors and direct reports be the same psg? Just wondering if HR allows this

@yhn: You are obviously an id--t, so in your case your statement about having a more junior direct report is probably true. Many with highly specialized technical expertise prefer to not get pulled into management with the assocaited never ending meetings and paper work, and are quite happy having mindless MBA types do the paper pushing so that they get on with the real work. Further, as you get older, you might observe that the know nothing paper pushing middle managers tend to be more disposiable every downturn, while the actual SMEs remain.
My supervisor is a level lower than I am. As an SME this is normal.
When the younger staff are your supervisor it is a clue that your career is no longer going anywhere. The writing is on the walls.1
I have been two grades above my direct reports: When you have very experienced petro techs and other advanced specialists it is common that they will have a higher grade than relatively young chapter or project managers.
They don't do forced ranking anymore.
