Thread regarding Lumen Technologies layoffs

Predicting the Next Press Release

I have no insider knowledge, however, my guess is that since the last 2 "big deals" involved AI, they will look for another opportunity to talk about AI.

Possibilities include (this is my opinion):

Google AI tie-in (however Google has their own fiber network and likes to own everything, so they may not want to admit to using Lumen)

IBM - is an also-ran at this point, but might do a joint press release

Oracle Cloud - Oracle bought a very large number of GPUs

since Starlink is a competing technology that directly targets mass-market Quantum Fiber, I wouldn't expect a tie-in with them ; I wouldn't expect any of the Elon Musk companies to work much with Lumen

Any other ideas? I suppose a tie-in with a consulting company like Accenture, McKinsey or BCG might be possible, but would be seen by many as being second-tier.

"Starlink? 50Mbps is avg max in service offerings. 100Mbps was cable modem speed from 25 years ago."

CenturyLink DSL in Florida, is still offering slow DSL and in more rural parts of FL these speeds can be low; the Ookla speed tests don't even rank CenturyLink in the top 7 of fastest residential ISPs.

Via CNET: "speed-testing website Ookla, a Speedtest Intelligence metric tracks the fastest ISPs based on median download speeds; its latest 2024 Speedtest doesn't include CenturyLink in the top seven fastest ISPs at all. The last time it included CenturyLink in its rankings, it came in seventh place behind Spectrum, Cox, Xfinity, Verizon, Optimum and AT&T Internet. That might not seem bad, but the six providers above it averaged approximately 170Mbps. CenturyLink rang in with a paltry 41Mbps, in comparison."

Add in that you don't have to deal with the abysmal DSL support and some might well feel that Starlink is better for their purposes.

"But Lumen is doing an exit plan. MSFT will acquire Lumen."

1000% agree. People who disagree just dont understand whats going on behind the scenes.

What is the financial value of these AWS and Meta deals? Are there signed contracts?

Lumen announced a deal with AWS, that must mean Amazon is going to buy Lumen.

sarc it is. But Lumen is doing an exit plan. MSFT will acquire Lumen. Just write this down now, then later you can say "I heard about that on the layoff site" back in Oct 2024.

"Lumen will close the door on legacy and sell off residential and small business fiber customers, in the end if you’re not a Fortune Global 500 lumen won’t be doing business with you!"

Thank not what I hear. Lumen management constantly says they are committed to the mass markets segment.

Starlink is FWA in space. It's a puffed up interim solution or for temporary service but it can't scale to compete with 100% fiber. First provider to fiber the customer, business or residential, wins. Which isn't Lumen in most cases.

“Starlink is a g-n aimed right at the heart of the most profitable part of telecom - so Lumen will never do business with them in terms of teaming up!”

Lumen is leaving the residential and small business market, the company is only placing residential fiber in it’s largest market, it’s not even trying to compete for grant money to bring fiber to the suburbs and outskirts of the large metros, let alone the smaller cities of 50,000 people or less or the Rural markets…

in regards to copper DSL and or pots services, engineering has made it clear that we are only doing the absolute bare legal minimum, full stop!!

Lumen will close the door on legacy and sell off residential and small business fiber customers, in the end if you’re not a Fortune Global 500 lumen won’t be doing business with you!

If lumen doesn’t do business with starlink, it will be due to purely political affiliation reasons, not because it’s a competitive threat

Following press releases will be additional hyperscalers similar to the MS/Meta announcements. Think Amazon and GCP. As far as Starlink, expect a resell agreement that other ISPs such as Comcast have announced. It will be an ancillary offering as backup service to traditional wireline products. Starlink and other Musk companies are huge clients of Lumen and that is only ramping up with the infrastructure and bandwidth requirements grow.

I expect an AI release right before 3Q results are announced in the first week of November, just like they announced the "5 billion" deal a day or two before 2Q results were announced.

Remember, Kate has said they are working on 7 Billion dollars of other deals. Expect news related to some of those deals coming soon. No sense in announcing that news too early. Use it as smoke and mirrors to mask the underwhelming Q3 numbers.

too many fluff press pieces like DEI, Community service and VOMF (whatever that is) without any real sales numbers, only light years away projections while legacy services plummet... trying to sell the sizzle without the steak. Nice bit of ledgerdermain there KJ and Stansbury
